I purchased a stock from AI a few years ago with the intension of building a rifle that reminded me of the M40A3 that I used in the Marine Corps. I have been out of the loop since then and recently want to finish the rifle. I am looking at putting a Remington 700 SPS Tactical .308cal into the stock and was wondering if anybody had any advise or opinion regarding the setup. The SPS has a 20" barrel which I haven't used but from what I remember 18" would shoot well out to 1000. I want the closest I can get to what I used to use and wondered if anyone had any range reports of the 20". Thanks

I pulled a 20" sps tactical out of its stock and put it in an AICS about a month ago (though mine is a 223).

Its sub-MOA at 100y.

Nothing to it, two screws pull the whole thing out, leave the magazine pieces, put it in the AICS and screw it in (torque wrench required to get it to the right weight).

Great thanks. I don't suppose you used any bedding did you? I'm hoping the AI stock is add the accuracy I am looking for to take it out to 1000yds. Clearly I will have to experiment with round type to reach the right velocity but I don't want to waste my time with it if its a lost cause.

Nope, no bedding

I had a 308 700PSS 26" in the same chasis prior which I took to gunsite for a long range class.

1k is pushing it for 308...really pushing it. My spotter/partner was using handloaded high BC lower weight (153gr I think) rounds that compute as better at that range and his accuracy wasnt noticeably better than mine..

This is kind of an oxymoron wouldnt you say???? AICS doesnt resemble the 40. But in any case, my 19 inch barrel runs to 1K. The SPS tactical is a great shooter out of the box. I had the SPS Tactical in an AICS 1.5 for a while and it shot 3/4 MOA or better. Great shooting gun for the money.

Re: Mounting Remington 700 sps tactical into AI stock

I know the AIC doesn't physically resemble the 40, I was more referring to the capability. I like the simplicity of the AIC. I just don't want to lose the range and accuracy I had with the more traditional type of set up. I haven't shot the shorter barrel rifles enough to know its limitations.

the 20 inch barrel will get to 1K with no problems, the only thing you are losing by going short is velocity of the round. Like i said i have a 19 inch rifle that shoots to 1K, my rounds seem slower on a chrono than the guys with 24 inch tubes, but ive never heard anyone or anything say "Damn that bullet hit me going really slow" but you will find there is a short tube crowd and long tube crowd. I believe that in some calibers you must run a longer barrel to take advantage of the round, but 308 nah chop it down.
