Re: Mounts and rings for a K98
Joop
I'd imagine the process is much the same as for your Moisin.
The mount on my 98k was originally fitted by Miltech. However when it came to zeroing the rifle I ran out of internal adjustment on the scope.
We removed the appropriate leg on the mount (easy to do as they are both dovetailed and held on to the bottom section of the mount by screws) and removed the necessary amount of steel from the bottom (in this case the front one) and then reblued and refitted it.
It made no sense to fill and redrill the receiver as the amount of movement downwards was no more than 20 thou and I didn't relish the idea of having a receiver that looked like patched up Swiss cheese!
But, as you say the measurements, alignment and drilling are critical and a small amount can make a big difference - especially in the case of the later versions of the SSR as they have not only the three screws ad locking screws but also a couple of pins to hold them in place.
It is certainly something I'd get a smith who has done these before to do.
The good thing about the SSR is that the legs on the rings are on the left side of the receiver so you can still use irons without removing the scope.
My smith has recently converted an ex-Norwegain K98 to scoped spec. he has some notes on the project on his website that includes some details on fitting the mount:
