I'm re-doing a K98 and I would like opinions as to what rings and bases to mount on the rifle.

Its not a collectors item and the numbers do not match up. Its just a fun plink gun that I've had for years and would like to mount a scope to. Also if anyone can give me some info on how far out this thing will shoot with decent glass and trigger, it would be appreciated

Thanks for the help.

If you're looking to keep the rifle looking "period" - check out the guys at Accumount:

http://www.accumounts.com/

They do a great line in reproduction mounts for many older rifles.

Not the cheapest - but good quality

Don't go with the "narrow band" versions, they don't hold the scope as well as the steel bands.

Also, if you are putting period glass on the rifle, check the tube diameter as it was not always constant, even from the same manufacturer/model.

I shoot my 98k with period Zeiss Zielvier glass and a Huber Concepts trigger out to 600yds.

That tests my ability to hold for wind and elevation as the scope has no windage adjustment and a three post reticule and the elevation adjustment has no clicks, only a constantly rotating drum.

I can still hit a Figure 11 target though....which is pretty much what the rifle was designed for.

I've never really shot the rifle for "groups" (I probably should give it a go one day) but I'd say it will probably hold somewhere between 2MOA and 1.5MOA with the HPS ammo I use at 100yds and opens up at longer ranges due to the idiot behind the trigger!

Re: Mounts and rings for a K98

I'm into the more "period correct" look, but I think that, with a modern scope and the right ammo, a K98 would be very accurate out to 1000 yards (as a matter of fact, you can find videos on Youtube of people doing just that). I've shot K98s with iron sights out to about 900, with a reasonable level of accuracy (plinking at large rocks in an open field). So, I think that even with a period scope you would likely be impressed with the results.

Basra Boy,

I like your SSR. I have an Accumounts SSR mount that I intend to use in the near future on a mixmaster '43 Oberndorf which has proven to be a great shooter. My question is; did you do the work, yourself and, if so, how hard was it? I've "re-snipered" a few Mosin ex-snipers, but I'm not sure if this is something I want to tackle on my own, as the alignment is critical and there's not much to index the base to when setting up to drill. Any thoughts or experience would be greatly appreciated.

I'd imagine the process is much the same as for your Moisin.

The mount on my 98k was originally fitted by Miltech. However when it came to zeroing the rifle I ran out of internal adjustment on the scope.

We removed the appropriate leg on the mount (easy to do as they are both dovetailed and held on to the bottom section of the mount by screws) and removed the necessary amount of steel from the bottom (in this case the front one) and then reblued and refitted it.

It made no sense to fill and redrill the receiver as the amount of movement downwards was no more than 20 thou and I didn't relish the idea of having a receiver that looked like patched up Swiss cheese!

But, as you say the measurements, alignment and drilling are critical and a small amount can make a big difference - especially in the case of the later versions of the SSR as they have not only the three screws ad locking screws but also a couple of pins to hold them in place.

It is certainly something I'd get a smith who has done these before to do.

The good thing about the SSR is that the legs on the rings are on the left side of the receiver so you can still use irons without removing the scope.

My smith has recently converted an ex-Norwegain K98 to scoped spec. he has some notes on the project on his website that includes some details on fitting the mount:

Go to the "Armourer's Notes" at the bottom left of the home page and read the article on "Building a K98k Sniper Rifle"

BasraBoy, that is one hot looking rifle! My man you are soooooooo lucky to have a nice K98 like that. Everytime I see one that is within my budget, its usually garbage, and the ones that look pretty good come with a price tag that looks pretty bad. Nice rifle.
