Moving from TX to CA for job - considering selling firearms due to laws there...

I recently accepted an offer for work in a company in Cupertino, CA.
I have considered selling off my firearms due to the very constrictive laws CA has and continues to push.

Can you help to chime in with your experience in the area (hopefully you live there), to give me info on:

1. The shooting community there
2. Semi auto rifles that would be legal there (I mostly own .308, some .223)
3. Reloading ability and component availability (out of state mail ordering, etc) - ease of doing it vs selling my equipment
4. Places to shoot (ranges, etc)
5. Anything else I would need/want to be aware of (like are people going to freak out if I have reloading hardware in garage, etc).
6. How liberal is the place, really?

In essence, I am interested in any info that would help in making my decisions to sell or keep/take with me to CA.

Really appreciate your help.

Best place for this info is calguns. I will give you some of the basics.

No mags over 10 rounds of any type.
No SBR/SBS/Cans/MGs
You need a spread sheet to figure if your AR is legal. Building a California-legal AR-15 rifle

No 50 BMG of any type.
No threaded pistol barrels.

Again if you have specific about guns I would ask on calguns since they know more than I do.


I have not found any powder or primers here. 22 is still non existent for the most part. People camp out at 5 am at walmart to buy it when it does come in. We have very strict amount of powder on hand laws. Don't quote me on this but I believe it is 1 pound black powder and 16 pounds smokeless per household. Any more is against the law in a serious way.

How Liberal is it? It depends on the location you are in. Los Angeles, SF etc... Are very very liberal. I get yelled (seriously) at consistently for my small NRA sticker on my truck. I have even had it go as far as someone boxing me in at a parking lot with their car, get out and start screaming and pounding on my driver window about being/supporting murder... I had to get out my phone and say I am calling the cops to get them to take off. There is no changing their minds or reasoning with them.

CCWs are impossible to get in most county's. I think LA county has issued 6 of them. Safe school zone laws are a bitch also. Pistols need to be in a locked container or in the trunk not accessible to the passenger compartment. Glove boxes or center consoles are against the law for pistols. Rifles need to be locked is school zones so Just assume all firearms need to be unloaded and locked for transport.

If you have children going to school, fights are zero tolerance. Self defense will still get them kicked out. When I was in school the bullies could hit you and that was a "hit not a fight". If I blocked a punch it was a fight and instant suspension of both of us. It has gotten worse now because LEO's are called and it will end up in front of a judge.

It happens every few months. I had to stop going to Big 5 (a sporting goods shop) because it was next to Panara Breads and it was happening almost every trip.

It's the standard I got a cause to fight people. My friends cousin was one of them. She goes to animal rights protests. Seriously they go as far as to want pet dogs be released... If it is not one cause it is another out here. Her group had a meeting at a guys house to plan a protest. That guy asked a few of the girls out, it became a protest against him with them camping out in his yard for a few days because he was a "womanizer".

Also all firearm transfers must go through a FFL and 10 day wait. You can't sell or buy them without an FFL to do the transfer.

Also if there is a pistol you really want get it now. We have a roster of DOJ approved handguns and if your not a LEO your not getting anything that is not on that roster without hoops. Also they are just starting to require microstamping on all new handguns to be added to the roster. You also will not be able to purchase any firearm outside of CA. You can buy it but it needs to be shipped to a CA FFL for wait and transfer.

I had a buddy move to Texas. He said your liberals are like our conservatives.

What a shame. I grew up in the San Diego area. I remember going to some really cool outdoor ranges with my dad growing up. Then one day they started closing the ranges one by one. Not sure which part of Cali you are moving too, we use to go to the Anza Borrego desert and shoot too. Pretty cool, all by yourself out there, and you could shoot any distance you wanted. But I wouldn't be surprised if that's off limits now too. Thirty years ago California was a gun friendly state. Sad.

I'm close to there, bring your stuff. There's places to shoot. Maybe not your backyard like some guys here but they are around. My garage is full of reloading stuff as well. There's no probelms ordering hazmat or reloading supplies. just check that calguns link to make sure you don't bring in any guns banned by name and the rest you can make compliant. You can have a bmg, just not a "rifle" meaning shoulder fired. You can buy lots of handguns "off list" at various dealers. Get into bolt guns - next to zero restrictions on those. Join NorCal Precision Rifle Club and shoot matches in Sacramento. Get to know other local shooters on Calguns and do BLM shoots at Pinoche. There are a LOT of shooters in CA and yes, compared to TX the restrictions are night and day, but not impossible to navigate. On liberalism, if you're a hardcore conservative, you'll be a minority and probably feel pissed off all the time. If you're a pretty moderate type, then you'll be at home as it's been my experience that folks there are mostly just left of center the way most folks in TX are mostly right of center. The really hardcore political types are the ones you have to worry about and they don't represent the mean by far (that goes just about everywhere but OK)

When my daughter was around 6 years old my wife wanted to take her to Disney Land, I said hell NO. Fought with her for a couple months about it. Then I said "Disney World I would do". I payed an extra $2,000 to fly everyone to Florida instead of drive to California. I have been back to Florida 2 more times.

I just want to expand on this and mention that the immigrants looking for a better life North of the border are not the perpetrators but the pawns in this scam.

If you are on the lower rungs of the socioeconomic ladder, you are the furthest away from the American dream in CA and NYC compared to any other place in this country. There are statistic that show how many weeks of minimum wage you need to afford things that everyone would consider bare essentials (housing, car, etc.). In the metropolitan areas of CA and in NYC the year does not have enough weeks to get there. If you want to make it in America "from scratch" you should avoid these places like the plague.

The corrupt politicians use the ignorance and naivete of the "disadvantaged" to get the votes to stay in power so that they can fleece people like our OP who work in CA in the higher income brackets to make a decent living (after the fleecing). The obvious questions nobody dares to asks is: Where does the fleeced money really end up? And who has vested interest to keep the disadvantaged in their condition?

CA is a big state. I won't refute any of the negativity expressed, but much of the state's population is conservative, rural and agrarian. The populations centers in the bay and LA render our votes mostly void and the problems with taxes, regulations and the like are a result. I live in the central valley, about 90 minutes from Cupertino, It is a world apart as far as demographics. We are 2 hours away from San Francisco, Yosemite and Sacramento. Mostly dairy cows and almond trees.

CCW's are readily issued in most counties in the valley. My 22 year old nephew farmer just got his in Merced County, for no specific cause. Lots of National forest, BLM land, and private shooting clubs to shoot at.
Bakersfield north to the Oregon border, with the exception of Sacramento is a completely different demographic and class of people. Most of the the coast, south of Santa Rosa, is much like Southern CA.

Unless your Job will absolutely be a long term thing, keep the guns, magazines, cans etc that you cant bring. Leave them with a family member or trusted friend and keep 'em in a good safe. Housing costs are much better east of the altamont and Pacheco pass, on the valley side. Live here and commute 30-45 minutes if you can. It will be a world of difference.

The shooting community is full of great folks who are an easy going bunch
Bring your reloading equipment. Powder is a little hard to come by depending on which one you want. Things are slowly getting better as manufacturers ramp up production to keep pace with demand.
The Sac Valley Shooting Center is a great place. Access to a 300 yard range for the general public, and a competition range to 1K - info here: Sacramento Valley Shooting Center

I guess you could always just leave the garage door down when reloading if you'd like to avoid the neighborhood seeing you do it.
Cupertino is in the Silicon Valley. Anything in the Bay Area proper will be pretty liberal.
From what I understand, there are quite a few ranges within about an hour of Cupertino, even down there in South Bay.

Are LEO super human cyborgs that are immune to the stresses and emotion of being human, NOPE. LEO can and do commit crimes, not all do but it does happen. This creates different class of people and is not morally right.

Other states have had similar laws and when pushed to court they have been struck down. If someone had the resources to fight it I am almost sure it would be over turned and either the restrictions (banned guns) would be lifted or the LEO exclusions would be removed.

And that leads to another problem I have with ALL politicians, but democrats seem by far the worst which California is absolutely run by democrats. They pass laws that they know strip us of our freedoms and don't give two shits, because they know that until it goes through the courts it is the law. Live right next to Cupertino. Are guns laws more lax in other states? Absolutely! But, there is a big contingency of CA gun owners continuously fighting for 2A. We don't intend to get pushed out by anyone.

That said, Cupertino does have a gun range. 100 yards, pistol, skeet. 1000 yard range (Sac Valley) and BLM are about 2 hours away. PM if you want more info.

My wife and I made the mistake of living there for about a year and a half. We were in Cupertino, in fact. Cupertino Village has the best Chinese/Japanese/Korean food in California and probably the country: it's where all the multimillionaire Asian tech pros eat when they want to eat the best of their food. San Francisco's Chinatown is NOTHING compared to it. Don't sell ANYTHING you own. Get bullet buttons for the rifles, 10 round magazines for the pistols, and whatever you can't adapt just park with a relative outside of CA for however long you'll be there. You likely will not find yourself willing to stay for very long, I can promise you that. The laws and taxes will make it not worth your while. That being said, I'd say screw the liberal panty wetters, be balls out pro gun. Don't hide, be proud.

For wine, Gilroy has exceptional wineries, two of my favorites were Solis and Fortino. Paso Robles is outstanding if you want a wine country getaway experience with 80+ wineries within an hour of each other--Napa and Sonoma are grossly overpriced and overrun by tourism and are best avoided.

It's salmon and abalone season and the weather is sweet up here in the far north. Pigs and turkeys are abundant right now too and whitetail deer as well.
I shoot on BLM land every weekend if I can and the ranger I know is quite friendly. We get along great because he frequently sees me picking up trash other dipshits leave behind. He wants to keep it open for shooting just as bad as I do.

Cupertino is west of San Jose, and south of Palo Alto. So that is DEEP inside the liberal-cutural hell. Plus thieves and gangs, and such. AND you are still a long drive from BLM or other wide open spaces that redeem themselves by being able to shoot there.
I suggest a driving trip into the state to look over that lay of the land. Surely you did not accept a job offer without looking at things there? Make one of your visits to the local Sheriff, and ask if you can get a carry license when you move there. See what kind of reception THAT brings.
The cost of living there is incredibly bad. Auto licensing, rent or purchase of a home, all that crap that goes with living there.
You will be in absolute shock when you add up the cost differences between Texas and CA.

I spent two years in Palo Alto during PA School, and hated every minute of it.
I volunteer at Fleet Week in October, and that is the longest week of the year. I have three 24 hour guards watching my RV in the venue (at Aquatic Park in SF), and still get up 2 times each night to check around the RV and count the golf carts we use. And that is on FEDERAL property!
We went to a wedding in Palo Alto last summer. Two cars were broken into in a Church parking lot. And that was a GOOD neighborhood.

Guys saying you can keep your ARs are partially correct. There is a list of lowers that are mentioned by name that would be assault weapons regardless of features(colt, DPMS, etc...). The maker of the upper is not a factor. Make sure you research it and ask on cal guns to confirm. The bullet button has not been confirmed by the CA DOJ as legal and is open to the interpretation of the local DA. That being said there are 10s of thousands of them and I do not believe anyone has been tried for possession of an AR with one.

Like I said before to each his own. The weather is important to me add I like to live life outside doing things. I love the beach. I like cycling on the road and in the mountains. I like skiing on snow and water, etc the list goes on and on. And no you can't surf in Utah... Nice try.

I will tell you winters suck in the east and the summers do to. It's amazing how everyone downs tons of money going to others places to do things. Growing up in Orange county... I drive an hour to do most of the forementined things. So to me the costs are close. She it might be more expensive but the weather is worth the money. It's not cheap to fly my family of 6 anywhere let alone to get 2 hotel rooms... So in my opinion try it out and leave if you don't like it. I've lived outside of California for 11 years. Ive lived in the east the Rockies and South America.... And I look forward to moving back to Cali.

So the only redeeming quality that anyone can come up with so far for California is the weather. I don't know which is worse, that weather is all California has to offer or that some people are willing to sell their soul to the devil for it.

Here is what I tell people that bitch about Utah's winters. There is not one single place on the planet that doesn't get sun at least part of the year, but there are places on the planet that haven't had snow for 100's or 1000's of years. There is a ton to do in the winter. Have you tried snowmobiling? If you are not sweating buckets you are not doing it right. I love the winter 'cause it keeps all the pussies indoors and away from my outdoor play ground.

Lived in Orem and park City for 5 years. My family has had a place in P. C. since the early 70's. My dad's a bountiful brave of 69' my ancestors settled the land, Monticello, price etc. Payson is named after my great great grandfather. So yeah I know utah, just a little. Like i said to each his own.

I love utah dearly but it's my second choice for now. I never said that my opinion won't change. So stay tuned...

Like my grand father says there's not a day that goes by that he misses the coal mines, nor a winter there. You can blame him for my love of my hometown of San Clemente.

I understand everything you are saying. I only use Utah because that is where I live, don't get me wrong Utah has a HUGE albatross around it's neck. Since I am a native I am used to it, my wife is a transplant from California (when she was 9 with her family) she has struggles with the "Utah issue" and it does affect my daughter but she lets it roll off her back like water off a ducks back.

But you are moving back willingly and if you can't tell that is ultra-rare. The hate for California comes from the fact that other than the weather there is not one thing that the state has to offer that is not better in another state.
