I would suggest that you contact a FFL in California .. I moved out of the State (thank God). I know that you can not have magazines over 10 rounds. Also you need to get a Gun License.
The FFL should know the in's and the outs -- but if it is a non-compliant gun and if you have some nice rifles -- I would find a trusted friend in GA to keep them for you so when you run from that State with your hair on fire, you can reclaim your weapons.
Good Luck and I hope you are moving there for a good reason. I moved out of that state and took a 50% hit to my Salary and would do it all over again.

If you happen to be active duty there are some exceptions while under orders to allow you to keep a few. If that's the case you may have better luck rephrasing the topic to reflect the circumstance.

Your handguns are fine, but they will cost $19 each. The CA DOJ roster list is only for NEW CA purchases.

Agree. Personally owned pistols "imported" into the state by individuals should be no problem. I would leave any high capacity magazines behind.
If you have an AR or other "evil looking rifle", install a bullet button before moving to CA. Also check the list of "absolutely banned" models and dispose of them prior to moving to CA.

I think you will be OK. My misses recently bought a Taurus PT 1911 "Not on the List" from a friend who is LE through a local FFL in Placerville CA. No problems.

The question is this: You are importing the gun, are you importing it for sale?
In the 25+ years I spent in California, I found it was up to the officer or the ADA to decide whether you had intent. Once they decided, it was up to you to prove you didn't.
Get that, they decide you have intent to sell the firearm, you have to prove you didn't and don't intend to sell the firearm in the state of CA. Yes, you have to prove you are innocent, not the other way around.
Mind you, that is my experience from growing up and living in CA. Your mileage may vary.
As per the prior poster, I too left CA with a salary decrease (mine got cut by about $40k when I left. The funny thing is...I actually got more cash per paycheck when I got to WA due to the lack of a state income tax

Google it. It is a device that disables the finger operation of the magazine release, so that a tool is needed, and therefore the rifle is not considered to have a detachable magazine, which allows the rifle to be configured with 'evil' features.

However if you were a resident here and had high capacity magazines that were in your possession on or before Dec 31 1999 they are legal for you to keep but not sell in the state of Kalifornia. There is some obscure stuff about magazine bodies as parts and assembling them into hi cap but I do not have enough info on them to give you a for sure answer so I will not give it.

They were very nice, and sent the paperwork, its more of a tax than anything else.

I've read that as well. If you import the magazine body, spring, follower, and floorplate seperatly and call it a magazine repair or something, you can skirt that pesky 10rd limit. I don't know the exact procedure or terminology though.

The only things that you can't have are assault weapons banned by name or feature and pistols with threaded barrels (also sbr's, no silencers, etc). It's not all that bad, you can buy an off the roster long or handgun from any class 7 licensed FFL and all they have to do a single shot process. I bought a Sig P226 Elite Dark and a buddy of mine got a P226 combat both are off the roster hand guns. As fa as the bullet button and 10 rond mags yeah it sux but if you take carbine courses or run the IPSC course anything goes. But you have to convert it back to CA compliant befor leaving the range.
I'll ask my FFL for you I'll get back to you in a few days or so.

it's not just the gun laws, it's everything, immigration, high taxes, liberal government, water/drought problems, etc.
If you have to go, good luck and try to stay out of the cities, I'd pick Nor Cal towards Tahoe if it were me, maybe Colfax or something up the highway a bit.

On the high capacity magazines, all you have to do is disassemble them and you can keep them. Once disassembled they become 'rebuild kits' and are fine. You can keep them that way and reassemble them for out of state shooting once out of state or convert them into 10 rounds only which is a popular thing to do with ARs and AKs since you wouldn't be stuck with the short 10 rounders.

I live in the area you mentioned. It's very conservative around here and there's plenty of good gun stores, so it's not too bad, but it's still CA.

First of all, WHY in the HELL did you move to California!!!??? You want to Know what to do when in California? Get the hell out!! Okay, sorry I had to get that out. It saddens me to see people giving up their rights to live in this socialist piece of shit poor excuse for a state. As to your question. If you allready own the weapon, you can register it here. But you want some advice from a fellow Cali resident? Unless you're goin to use it for home defense, dont register it. If a Leo runs the serial# it wont come up unless its been stolen. And if some how they find out you didnt register it, the worst thing they can do is make you register it. ( They have you take it to a ffl and do the paperwork)
And unless you act like a troublemaker to the cop, they wont even bother. All they really look for is stolen guns. First of all, WHY in the HELL did you move to California!!!??? You want to Know what to do when in California? Get the hell out!! Okay, sorry I had to get that out. It saddens me to see people giving up their rights to live in this socialist piece of shit poor excuse for a state. As to your question. If you allready own the weapon, you can register it here. But you want some advice from a fellow Cali resident? Unless you're goin to use it for home defense, dont register it. If a Leo runs the serial# it wont come up unless its been stolen. And if some how they find out you didnt register it, the worst thing they can do is make you register it. ( They have you take it to a ffl and do the paperwork)
And unless you act like a troublemaker to the cop, they wont even bother. All they really look for is stolen guns. Remember, you need to be careful when you move to a foreign country, especially a communist one.
I can personally vouch for the massive exodus out of CA. They're all coming to my state. The only problem is the refugees coming from the peoples republic of CA can't seem to leave their liberal ideologies from their former country behind and have decided it best to turn their new home into a Neo California.

I'm sure the original poster wants his original question answered. So I called a local ffl and asked for him. As long as it's CA compliant he is good to go. But if you want to ask for ourself call these folks from Valkyrie arms they sell off the roster guns all day long. 408 957.0600 hope that helps.

California is full of stupid gun laws that should be ignored. It is NOT illegal to posses an unregistered handgun in CA. Just don't be stupid about it, like carry without a CCW, and you should be fine.

CCW...what is that, I think maybe a few thousand people in San Diego county have a valid CCW issued for regular carry, not ones who use their CCW's issued for PSD / security work as a full fledged CCW. California is ANTI-ccw 100%.

Many of California's counties issue CCW permits. Unfortuately for daybreak1199 and myself, our Sheriff will not allow us the "privilege".

Ah... don't know if you live there are not ... but right now it IS illegal to own an unregistered weapon in Cali. And if you ignore the the gun laws there -- you will go to jail. You need to have passed the weapons test before you can even purchase a weapon.
I escaped from California, I grew up there and sad to say I am a native. many of my friends are LEO's and they are told to take those laws very seriously.
