Moving, what guns to take?

So I just found out I'm moving to Prescott AZ within the next month for grad school. A quick google search shows there are some ranges in the area but nothing I've seen that is really long range. I definitely plan on taking a couple of guns with me, but my selection will be based on what kind of ranges I have access to.

I'm thinking of taking an AR or 2,a couple of pistols, a couple of rimfires, and my long range rifle. I'm on the fence about whether or not I put my 7 SAUM barrel on or just leave my 6mm creedmoor barrel on my long range build. I would like to shoot out to a mile eventually which is why I bought my 7 SAUM set up. If I can't get out much further than 1000 yds, I wont bother with the 7mm. Anyone on the hide from the Prescott area? Any thoughts?

If you cannot, for any reason, take your whole set with you, sort it out by level of importance.

First off, any guns that I am going to need for my immediate defense I am going to take. A pistol and a carbine/shotgun at the minimum.

The specialty guns that are for hunting and target work I would find a (trusted) relative or a (trusted) friend to store them for me. If you have multiple versions of the same type of gun and it does not have much in sentimental value I would consider selling it or storing it aside as a future financial investment for when life decides to serve a shit sandwich.

Pretty sure there is BLM/state land that you can go long range on.
If you are from east of the Mississippi, you will be shocked at how much land you own (federal/state land is YOURS!!!).

There's a gazillion square miles of BLM land in Arizona, you can shoot as far as you want.

I’ll beat the dead horse too. It’s Arizona dude, you have a real shot at never having to attend another shooting range ever again, and you should be very happy about that. Bring the arsenal, change your address, and add to that arsenal while you’re there!


I was talking to a AZ fish and game guy about prairie dog shooting locations a while back. He was super friendly, and gave me a number of locations. At the end, and with a totally straight face, he politely asked that I position myself at least one foot off the highway before I begin shooting. It was awesome!

Mostly US Forest Service and State Trust Lands around Prescott. You can shoot on those too but can be more restrictive than BLM. Expect closures of all to shooting during high fire risk periods though.

One hour drive in any almost any direction though and you are in shooters paradise.

I've grown up in Maryland and have lived here my whole life. I had no idea that there were places where you could just go out and shoot. That is such a foreign concept to me. Thanks for the info.

Embry Riddle is where I'm going for grad school. Once I get out there I will definitely have to put it out that I'm looking for some long range shooting to see if anyone bites. I think shooting with other people is a little more enjoyable. Keeps some of the fish stories a little more honest IMO.

That shouldn’t be any trouble. AZ is one of the best “gun states” in the nation, so ther’ll be lots of like minded peeps.

AZ is a good place to be. Take all of 'em with you, find a good and secure place to live, and never go back east again.

Enjoy your time in AZ. Great gun state for sure. We snowbird there every February if schedules allow.

Just got back from Prescott. Forget Whiskey Row and go to that speakeasy. Much better.

Take a hunting rifle. Tons of hunters and game.
