I would like to try a mule deer hunt in South Dakota next season. Does any one want to share some helpfull info? I would be open to suggestion on public land diy. I've been to SD on a few pheasant hunts and have almost always seen some very nce deer. I've never hunted mule deer, so I'm conservative with antler size expectations. Thanks for any info fellas. If you don't want to put it out there for everyone to see please pm me. Just looking for some help.

Re: Mule deer hunt in south Dakota?

Curious as to why SD for mulies?

If I remember correctly the East River units are tough for non-resi. You have to wait till the third drawing before you can even try. So that would leave you to West River which is probably a ways away from area where you have chased ditch chickens in the past.

I think the best way to go about it is to do the usual and hit up local game and fish for starters. SD puts out a really good hunters atlas for their walkin program, it also shows school section and other public access. Once you have settled on several locations that look good, hit me with a PM and I will see if I can help narrow your search.

If you are not stuck on SD you may want to think of one of the other western states. There are mulies in SD, just not like CO, MT or Wyo.

Good luck on your quest.

I was given very good info on this subject a couple years ago from a member in Wyoming. I can't seem to get any of my friends here at home to go with me and share the driving time. And don't want to give up 4 days of a six or seven day trip, to driving time. I saw some nice whitetail and a few good muleta the last time I went pheasant hunting out near kinebeck, west of Mitchell.

na na na, go west river SD, lots of people over look SD for nice mule deer, we got em here just like MT and WY, but all the big boys are on private outfitters land, if ur willin to pay i'm willin to let you diy on private and would guarantee you a nice deer.

I looked at the hunt atlas, I was hunting birds and seeing deer in 45a. Lyman county, south of the interstate. I think that's west river, isn't it. Thanks for the help folks.

Re: Mule deer hunt in south Dakota?

Lyman, and Kennebec, are just west of the missouri, East river apps are more difficult, you can apply for a special west river deer tag, if your out of state, its 500.00 but your chances of drawing are better than 80%

Re: Mule deer hunt in south Dakota?

I did a do it yourself hunt in SE Wyoming for antelope and mule deer. We had a great time and there was no shortage of game if you don't mind getting far enough of the beaten path on foot. We did the same thing with the bird dogs for pheasant in SD and its not real reperesentative I'm sure but we saw many more mule deer and whitetails in Wyoming.
