Here's my problem. There aren't any gunsmiths around here that install muzzle brakes. Believe me. I've called everywhere. I really don't want to break my rifle down, and am just not comfortable with mailing it. This gun is my baby. So what's the best way to install one without threading it? So far I've read:

TIG welding
silver soldering
JB welding (seems to be 50/50 peope love it/hate it)
Drilling holes in the brake to pin it
some guys have even just used red LocTite

Any suggestions??

Roedale

That's a clamp on brake, no threading, and yes, they will ship to the US. There was/is a group buy for them.

i sure as hell wouldn't put one of those on a tapered barrel, nor one that's muzzle size isn't listed as a size it fits.

I went through the same thought process and also did not want to thread my rifle. Also looked at Roedale brakes. But then decided on going with threading because of giving me the opinion of switching out for muzzle break, or suppressor. If you go to a reputable gun store they can ship it out to the muzzle break company to ensure that it is installed properly. For example Gemtech will do gunsmithing and installation.

If this is your baby dont use JB wels or tig weld it if you weld the barrel is if screwed soldering will just mess everything up. if you have to have one on it first you will need to have one made not many make a break with a .800 paralell hole in the back if you can get someone like RWS to turn you up one without a thread and a .800 paralell then use loctite allembly compound you will need the correct diameter of the barrel for a slip fit but on the 17 it would work but realy it would be best to get a smith to fit the break even if using loc tite to make sure it is bored correctly to fit the barrel get it sent to a smith here on the hide and have them thread it 1/2 28tpi if you ever get a supressor licence you will be good to go i suppose you also want it cm and blued? most smiths here use durakote and the like so bluing would be the biggest issue i see if you want it for a blued barrel but it can be done but dont do it yourself get it done properly.

I realy think the reason people dont want to do it is because it is not an expensive rifle and the cost of a break and fitting will be close to half the rifles value and they dont see it worth doing some people are like that but if you want it done it is yours.

But come on if it realy is your Baby for fucks sake welding?

if you were happy to do that trust the postage and a gunsmith.

Use Green Seal Retaining Loctite,I can't remember the number but I'll PM you with it.Since it's for looks pick one you like take it to a machine shop and have it bored.0015-.0002",that is 1.5-2 thousandths of an inch over barrel size.Don't tell them the size take the rifle and let them mic it,you could have some small set screws installed at this time also.I've used this on a 50 Beowulf upper that now has about 700 rnds through it with no movement, and no set screws.

Re: Muzzle Brake Install Without Threading?

FWIW:

Years ago I built a 338LM AI for a buddy. He wanted a brake put on it and didn't want me to thread the muzzle for some dumb reason.

I voiced my concerns, but he insisted so I nursed him through doing the work himself because I thought it was that bad of an idea. He pinned it and used set screws.

A couple weeks later we are in Raton, NM together at the Whittington center's 1000 yard Tubb range. I'm pulling tgts in the pits for him and on his 3rd shot there's a strange sound followed by half an hour of silence. (no cell phone reception there) He eventually comes driving down into the pits at a very slow speed (odd for this guy) and gets out of his car staggering with a bloodied up face.

The brake blew off the muzzle and the little Unertyl external turret scope drilled him right in the eye as he wasn't ready for the sudden increase in recoil.

A couple eye surgeries later he's better, but it's still not 100% and this was over 7 years ago.

I'll never install a brake that doesn't get threaded. Ever.

Take it for what its worth.

Is this the one that you're refering to?...

That's it,that or the one RADcustom recommended will work fine.Just make sure it's a good fit like I told you earlier and you'll be fine.Let it go on the barrel about .750 minimum and you're good.
