Muzzle brake or Suppressor

I have a DeadAir Nomad and I'm debating using it with new Tikka Tac A1 instead of factory muzzle brake. I've seen conflicting info on which actually mitigates recoil better. What say you?

My brakes reduce the recoil more. My cans are much more pleasant to shoot and recoil is acceptable. The can does add variables the brake doesn't suck as first round shift (not much, but there) as well as heat mirage and way more fouling. That said its worth it to me.

My PVA brake and factory sako brakes shift my zero as much as a can does. I’ve had a MPA brake that I could take on and off with no zero shift at all but sold it quickly as the damn blast was unacceptable at the shooter double plugged. The only time I would consider a brake is on the big boys (338 lapua, etc) or competition. Beyond that either a suppressor or bare muzzle. If a suppressor is an option it would stay on.

I have a little bastard on my TNS 6.5x47L. Works wonderful but punishing to the ear and everyone on both sides of me. I never take it off so zero is rock solid, but it's a play rifle for when I thought I could get past my mental issues preventing me from shooting a ninja match. I just can't do it....

The Thunderbeady TOMB on my mk13 Mod7 works awesome but Jesus, guys better not have anything set up on benches to the left or right.

I have the little bastard as well. Works extremely well, but blows all the dog bowls and shit off the porch when shooting from prone, and clears my sinuses.

Since getting suppressor, it stays in the parts pile.

Suppressor hands down. Why punish yourself and others beside you for a little recoil reduction? The only gun I don’t shoot suppressed regularly is my pistol. I even shoot that suppressed when I can. 147gr in a G19, don’t even need to wear hearing protection.

Once I figure out a good holster setup for a suppressed pistol, that will stay suppressed too.

Suppressor here. TBAC Ultra 9. Used to run a JEC brake. 260 Rem

Both control recoil very well. Suppressor is way more pleasant to shoot. A little more mirage even with the cover when firing 10+ rounds. Dirtier with suppressor. All my hunting guns are suppressed as well now.

Shooting next to walls/building/truck with brake got very annoying. Louder than bare muzzle by a bit but only because it did it’s job very well

So to fix that I went suppressed and sold the JEC to a buddy. Now instead of being behind it I’m next to it....?

He needs to get a suppressor soon to...

Shot with a gen two fat bastard, loved the recoil reduction on my 6.5cm but it was obnoxiously loud to me and everyone behind me.

Ran an ultra 9 on the same rifle and the recoil was slightly more noticeable but it was still extremely pleasant to shoot and stupid quiet. The brake went with the gun when I sold it and bought an ultra 9 with the funds from that. I now run the 30cb brake on my 6br so when I visit my can in jail I can use.

I’d go suppressed and never look back. Or use the Area 419 sidewinder/hellfire brake/suppressor system if you want easy swapping between a brake and suppressor of your choice.

Will check out the Maverick
@Hollywood 6mm what do you think?

The Maverick works as advertised, maybe better. I've probably got more time behind one right now than anyone that's not a 419 employee, and I am still shocked by how good it is. I let a buddy of mine shoot my 308 with the Maverick on it this weekend in match and suppressor configurations. After he got done, I asked what he thought. His response - "That's pretty good for a 6 Creedmoor."

He didn't realize I had the 308 barrel plugged in, he's used to me running 6s. When I told him it was a 308, he almost didn't believe me until I showed him my ammo box.

damn thats impressive

Anecdotal advice but I have a 22" 308 bolt gun with a brake on it and a buddy of mine has a 22" 308 bolt gun with a can. I enjoy shooting his much more. Maybe it has slightly more recoil but it doesn't kick up a ton of dust and is all around more pleasant to be around when it fires.

Sounds like I'll be switching my Nomad from gun to gun to always use.

Thats what I would do. I haven't gone down that rabbit hole yet but once I can I plan on getting cans for EVERYTHING. Then I will never have to shoot un-suppressed. This will happen around the time my money tree starts producing Jacksons.

Suppressors are much more pleasant to shoot, IMO. They reduce recoil AND the concussion coming from the barrel. Yes, not as much recoil reduction as a brake, but the concussion mitigation is awesome.

Guess it depends on what you are putting it on and the suppressor also. I have two AAC 51t cans that I haven’t even attempted to see if they will be good on my precision guns, but really want to test out a system with better lockup or direct thread. That and I don’t foresee me hanging a suppressor off a 28” barrel for positional shooting

I feel ya on that one! In the meantime the one 30 cal can I have will just have to go back and forth.

I currently use the DeadAir Nomad on my 300 blackout 10.5" pistol and it's BADASS on that. I'll also be using it on my new Tikka Tac A1 6.5 Creedmoor 24" barrel....so it will make it essentially a 30" barrel. The Nomad is like 6 or 6.5 inches but is 1.75 in diameter to make up for less length than others. I've been very pleased with it.

All the brakes/compensators/flash hiders are gone. Suppressed is the only way I shoot.

I noticed that I can get better follow up and watch my hits with a can. The muzzle blast is so disruptive that I loose sight of the target whether the rifle moves or not.

That said, I don't want to shoot a bolt action 50 without the massive brake Barrett makes. You just know you need to be doubled up to be within 50' of that going off.

I do feel my brakes do a better job of reducing recoil. That said, even for competition I prefer my tbac can. Just so much nicer to shoot and be around. I am considering switching to 24” barrels to cut down on some oal. 26” with an ultra 7 is pretty damn long.
