Gunsmithing Muzzle Brake

I could sure use some help. Has anyone removed the Brake from their RPR in 223? I am limited on the tools, so is this something I can do or is this a project for a Gunsmith? I don't feel that a Brake is need for the amount of recoil vs the sound. I thank you all in advance for your comments and knowledge.
 
Rab, it should be as simple as getting the right sized wrench and twisting it off. A padded vises would definitely be handy. Those rifles come with thread protectors right? You not going to want to run without​ anything protecting those threads
 
K-tech, Yes I have the protector for the threads. I also have a set of fiber pads from Lowes for a 5" vice and a 12" adjustable wrench but I didn't know if that would fit the task. Has anyone had any luck with just these tools? Thanks
 
I'd be really careful with an adjustable wrench; they tend to have a lil "give" to them. If that nut is on there really tight and you have start using some force it will be really easy to slip and round the nut. Not to mention what you'll do to your knuckles
 
Thanks GH41,That wed site show a much better picture of the brake than the manual. In the manual it looks like one part, was not sure. I do have wrench that will fit just not long enough. Guess I give it a try. Hope that the jam nut will back off a little.
 
Hey Guys, Got it off, sure was a Bear to brake the lock nut loose. Had to use a hammer on an open end wrench. I guess where there is a will there away. What was hard to believe was that with the brake off the POI was 4 1/8" high and 3/4" left from the original 100 yd. zero. I like it better with the brake off.
 
It's a little late but often times brakes are installed with Rocksett or red Loctite. Use a little heat from a small torch and that will usually make them easier to get off.

Suggestion- get a thread protector so you don't mess the threads up. One day you might want to put a brake or a suppressor on.
