This is one of the first rifles I purchased, back when I was 14 or 15 (parents technically "bought it" as I was underage.) This is actually where my accuracy sickness started. I built a bench and a backstop to shoot out back, as well as taking a number of steps to make the rifle more accurate (Green Mountain barrel, VQ stock, trigger job, etc.)

Fast forward about 14 years, and this gun has basically been collecting dust. I decide that it's time to have a trainer, so I dug it out and started modifying again. I ordered an unfinished Tacticool, sanded it down, and then handed it and the rifle off on my friend Jesse, who goes by "jbell" here on the hide. He installed a full brass pillar and then bedded the action around the v-block as well as well as the first few inches of the barrel. When I got it back I painted it "multicam" which took a couple tries to get right and then painted the barreled action black. I replaced the old Weaver rail with a 15 MOA Picatinny rail from Tactical Solutions. I have a mil mil SS12x42 on order but I was inching to shoot it so I threw on a S&B 3-20.

All that's left now is threading the barrel for my Sparrow. I shot it at 50, 100, and 230 yards yesterday. 230 is a trip, incredible how much wind moves a .22 at that range. I was breaking 4" clays with pretty good consistency once I had the wind figured out.

The big question is- will this be "enough" or is it just a gateway drug to a far more expensive .22 venture?

I hear a lot of people say that [whiny teacher voice on]Your trainer needs to mimick your real rifle in every way, look and feel[whiny teacher voice off].

In short, it really depends on what needs your trainer needs to fulfill?

1. Do you want to learn how to read wind? Yep, you are pretty much done.

2. If your "real gun" is a bolt gun, and you want practice running your bolt, then no, this is not what you need. <--What you need here is a bunch of dummy rounds for practice on bolt manipulation and trigger control/press/reset.

So, it really depends greatly on what you want your trainer to train you on.

Hope that helps.

(FWIW, my current trainer is a 10/22 built similar to yours and a CZ-455 varmint tactical trainer.)

Heck all I shoot anymore is the .22 lr. That darn round is way to fun, and cheap to pass up.

Nice looking rig and great painjob as well!

10/22 are a lot of fun! Can get very expensive getting them tricked out. I took a couple of mine to Randy at CT Precision in CT. He does wonders with these things.

Re: my 10/22 "Precision Trainer," almost done

How about I send you a scope for that 10/22 and you send me yours so I can put it on a .308?
That is more than I would ever put on my 10/22.

That would be awesome!

<div class="ubbcode-block"><div class="ubbcode-header">Originally Posted By: StanwoodSpartan</div><div class="ubbcode-body">This is definitly just a gateway 22lr. Just skip everything and pick up a Sako Quad build... </div></div>Truly. I actually tried to find a Quad with no luck. Euro Optic had some left over from the build, but they were still 3+ months out and I am not a patient man! So within the last couple of days I bought:
CZ 455 Precision Trainer
Lilja drop in 455 barrel
Timney 455 trainer
DIP 25 moa rail

DIP was out of stock on their bottom metal, so I still need that as well as a thread job on the barrel, a bedding job, and a cerakote job.

And if it doesn't shoot, the whole thing is getting scrapped and I'm moving on up. To either a Quad, or a 40x build.
