I finally figured out why my 5r wouldn't shoot 1/4 moa anymore. It's the lot number of ammo makes alot of difference. With the right lot no. of FGMM ammo it will shoot <1/4 moa. Couldn't get any better then 1 to 1 1/4 moa with a new lot no I ordered # X610 then got frustrated and opened a older box of # 503 and "wal-la" back to 1/4 moa. Now I have 400 rds of 168gr and 700 rds of 175gr I don't know what to do with because those lot no's just doesn't shoot well. I guess it's just chance on what ammo your going to get when ordering from someone like Midway or anybody else. Factory ammo is just not consistent enough. Even FGMM ammo. Time to start reloading, but what to do with all this ammo that doesn't shoot? Just a big waste to go blow it off for nothing.

I'm sorry you spent your $$$ on a lot that doesn't shoot for you, however; almost for sure-there is someone looking for that lot, because it's a house on fire in their rifle. You may want to put it up for sale on this board, maybe even take a 10% loss, or the like, it would sure beat a 100% loss-or a trade! God Bless.

Re: My 5R Milspec and Fed Gold Match Lot No's

I dunno what to tell you brother. I have never seen FGMM that wasn't capable of 1/2 MOA in rifles that support it.

168gr Federal Gold Metal Match is our duty load. We shoot a lot of it.

If it were me I would call Federal and see what they say.

For the record I have shot the blue/while box FGMM and the red box FGMM side by side to the exact same zero. I have also yet to need to re-zero when switching lots of 168gr FGMM.

Chronograph numbers inside the lots are nice as well. I have not run different lots over the chrony on the same day though.

Just for grins I may have to buy a box from each of the different stores around town and chonograph it and check zero. It might be an interesting video.

Re: My 5R Milspec and Fed Gold Match Lot No's

A follow up to my post, I just removed the bullets from the cases of both Lot #'s (503 & 610). I weighted the charge in each, did it to 3 rounds from each lot. The most accurate lot (503) had 42.8 gn. of powder + or - .1 tenth of a gn. and the inaccurate lot (610) had 43.9 gn. + or - .1 tenth of a gn. of powder. Everything else I checked seemed pretty close or consistant, casing weight, bullet weight, but the Length over all of each round did fluctuate a little more. So That explains to me that Fed Gold Medal Match 168gn. is not consistant in their manufacturing process. So now that I have all my new reloading equip. I will start reloading for accuracy now.

That will be the ticket. My current 175 SMK load gave me a .217 group

Re: My 5R Milspec and Fed Gold Match Lot No's

I'd shoot it all. A 1 moa target is still pretty plenty challenging at distance. Small groups are nice but less forgiving ammo will simply demand more from the shooter.
