I took my 6yr old deer hunting for the first time this weekend. On Sunday morning at around 0715, this big old doe(100+lbs)and 4 yearlings walked out. My son says"Dad, I can't shoot the momma, what about the little ones?" After I assured him the yearlings would be fine, he took the shot, and she hit the ground, but was hit back and required a finisher.
(I'll take it for a 6 year old, 22 degrees, 1st deer, and 60 yards away.)
He used a NEF Superlight Youth Model . 223 Remington with Speer 62 grain Gold Dots. Full penetration and larger than expected exit wounds.
