I am sure this one will get LOTS of opinions...which is good! That is what it is all about.

As some of you know I have been posting up more videos of our coyote hunts and with that comes lots of questions from folks interested in getting into yote hunting.

So I posted up this new video with some basic advise and tips on what works for ME and my hunting friends. YMMV,etc.

Take care,Stan

Re: My coyote hunting tips for new hunters VIDEO

Great video Stann and keep up the good work. It's nice of you to spend the amount of time you do making videos and posting them up. I work for the county i live in and you would be surprised at all the people who are letting me hunt on their property that i ask. I have some small tracks and some large farms and always getting new places. I have a fellow at the office who makes me a large photo of an arial view of the parcel i am going to hunt. I keep my info on it and it lets me see any creeks, land terrain, and also what surronds the property. I keep a folder of all the places. Next year i am going to get a AR and some night vision equiptment to try out hunting them at night. I like you just predator hunt and shoot at the range. Between the 2 and reloading it consumes all my time. Take care and have a happy New Year.

Re: My coyote hunting tips for new hunters VIDEO

Great video and I look foward to seeing more of your work.
I started hunting coyotes, cause they were killing our chickens and rabbits.Plus they were putting a strain on the fawn and bird population.I deer and bird hunt on the same lands that I coyote hunt,so I have a good idea of where they're hanging out most of the time. After the first week of deer season, they go nocturnal. Then I break out the NV+Thermal equipment and turn into a vampire.Even with the Hi tech scopes+gear, they still surprise me.Keep up the good work.

BgBmBoo, with your electronic call/decoys, do you leave them alone or do you ever add anything yourself? I'm talking squirrel tails, raw meat, etc? I'm about to start gettin' into some coyote hunting myself, pretty excited.

Nope...just the call and decoy. A lot of folks do not even use a decoy...just the call.
The e-call (FoxPro Prairie Blaster) I use has a built in decoy.

An old school decoy is just a stick with a turkey feather tied to a string so it moves around in the breeze.

Also..some states prohibit the use of "baiting" so doing so could be illegal. So do your home work and talk to the Fish & Game Dept. for your state.

Yep...hunting coyotes is very exciting and fun.

Take care,Stan

Great Video Stan!

Another decoy tip in addition to the feather on a string, is to tie a blank CD to a string and hang from a tree. Is killer and has visibility for a long way. I am told it works good for bobcats but cannot seem to get on one, using any thing!!!!

Re: My coyote hunting tips for new hunters VIDEO

Bobcats are tuff. You have to be REALLY patient In most stands. The dumbest predators I have hunted have to be fox. I have called in 5 at one time...shot one...the one behind it just jumped over the one dying and I shot that one. Still another one came in and my buddy shot it. When then saw two more just standing there watching us talk to each other, etc.

Take care,Stan

Re: My coyote hunting tips for new hunters VIDEO

hahah sweeetttt. im after fox too! its hards getting up north for a better chance at those animals though. i took my bear out of lassen this year though. good tips video by the way. i liked how you mentioned hitting that pup distress after a shot. it really works! oh and i use the feathers on a string trick but it sucks when there isnt much of a breeze at all. ha.

also, on land that has been hunted, the coyotes will be more weary and cautious to come into a call. i had a couple come into a call after about 25 minutes!! they will take their sweet time and the FIRST thing they do will go down wind. smart!

Re: My coyote hunting tips for new hunters VIDEO

its funny that you mention that becuase last year in kansas i had a bobcat walking right into me about 50 yards out. the only thing that was moving on me was the bottom of the blaze orange vest i was wearing (i was deer hunting). it seems like they like flashy things. ha

Re: My coyote hunting tips for new hunters VIDEO

Awesome video Stan! Learned a ton.

I am interested in night hunting coyotes/foxes/bobcats in the woodland environments of NOVA (NOrthern VirginiA). Private and public land. Browning 20ga shotgun for my son & Scorpyd RDT-125 Crossbow for me.

Any recommendations on a Red/Green LED Night Light? Read solid reviews about the XLR100 (for the weapon) and XLR 250 (for the hand) night lights by EWT.

Thanks in advance for your feedback.

Re: My coyote hunting tips for new hunters VIDEO

Great video. I just went for the first time yesterday morning it was windy as hell and I should have stayed home but I just recieved a caller I got from ARPredatorhunter and had to try it out. Didn't call in any coyotes but it attracted the attention of a redtailed hawk and some crows. I look forward to checking out your other vids.
Thanks Again

I agree, I got a fox on opening day this year that kept running around my electronic call right before daylight for at least 10 minutes. No decoy was used.

Re: My coyote hunting tips for new hunters VIDEO

Stan thanks for the information, helped a lot and got some understanding. (we get out and walk 30 feeet....)
We have been hunting about 10 different times and we go all day, on average day we get 5 or 6 different spots and we have only killed one bobcat and zero coyotes.

We are limited here in Calif. with night hunting. Can only use up to a 9v. powered light. Can not be mounted to the rifle. No active IR NV and even passive NV is not defined in the state regs.

So hopefully someone here who hunts with NV can chime in and give you the info your looking for.

Thanks Neoshooter....again...I just hunt for fun and what works for me may not work for you/others. The video was just to get folks started down the right path.
There are many very good coyote hunters here so I hope they add to this thread.

Take care,Stan
