My first 10/22 build

After building myself and my wife some ARs and blowing through hundreds of dollars in ammo to plink on the weekends, I decided a 22lr was in order before we put ourselves in the poor house.

I looked at a lot of the different dealer exclusive 10/22s out there and liked some of them but nothing that was 100% what I wanted. So rather than paying $500 on something I was going to change, I opted to go with a bare bones 10/22 and build it up exactly how I wanted.

Academy had the carbine model for $197 so I bought it.

Knowing that the barrel and stock would be changed on it, I took it apart and gave the stock a rattle can paint job.

On order is an 18" Keystone .920 bull barrel and a Hogue overmold stock in OD. Looking into a decent scope next.

I'm hoping some of the you more experienced folks around here can keep an eye on my build and offer some advice if you see me screwing it up.

YES 10/22 are a lot of fun and there are lot of things you can do to them.

One of the big problems with stock 10/22s is the trigger. You can go Kidd, Volqartsen, or if you're like me and on a budget/cheap check out Hornet custom. Great drop in trigger and mine has no creep. I haven't tried a Kidd so I can't compare the two, but the Hornet can't be much worse.

Another thing to consider is a canted scope base.

Thanks fellas. I just finished pulling the trigger assembly apart. I deburred and polished a lot of the parts on the hammer, sear, and disconnector. Also did some polish work on the bolt and upper receiver as well as radiusing the rear of the bolt. Reassembled everything and it did feel smoother to me when I pulled the charging handle back but it could be the placebo effect.

Probably the lowest cost upgrade in regards to a better feeling / lighter trigger is a new Hammer. I have used both the Power Custom and the Volquartsen Hammers and have obtained better results with the Power Custom Hammer. The only other thing I did was polish the rest of the internals per instructions on the net and also did the autobolt modification.

Yes these things can be a money pit in short order but they are fun to tinker with and you'll get a education in the process.

Yep, welcome to the money pit club.

If you're gonna upgrade the trigger, don't nickel and dime it. I've tried all of the better known trigger kits out there and they all pale in comparison to the Kidd two stage. The Volquartsen doesn't even come close.

Bull barrel in place along with Blackdog 25rd magazine

Hogue OM in OD along with a spare cheapie bipod I had laying around

In the mail are:
Medium height scope rings
KIDD buffer
KIDD extractor
Top rail
Extended pull style mag release

3 shot groups at 50yds using the tailgate as a bench. I'm not very familiar with this type of shooting so any input you guys might have would be greatly appreciated.
