Hey Everyone,

WARNING: LOTS OF GUN PORN!

Saving best for last
smile.gif
First post to fourth for rifle, when I received it new. Fifth post for getting the proper scope mounted! The sixth and seventh post for final version (minus Atlas Bipod and NEAR Alphamount).

I know this has been a long time coming, and I have left you guys waiting as to what I had! Well wait no longer!

I bounced between a few different rifles for quite awhile (over a year), with Steyr, AI, and Sako all being strong contenders... The entire time knowing that this would be my first and only rifle for a very long time.

In the end I opted for a Steyr Mannlicher (Pronounced Man Licker? Just kidding) SSG-08 .308. I have always been a huge fan boy of Steyr, and with what I could gather from reviews and opinions, I would not be disappointed. The rich heritage of the "Green Gun" and Steyr also did not hurt.

So with that being said I will now post some pictures, later will come my feelings and opinions on the rifle, as well as some pictures of "proof" of how it is shooting for me (benched at first). I'm sorry if the pictures are not of perfect quality and lighting, but circumstances would not permit, I will update the photos when I can take pictures in the optimum settings. And will also add more pictures as I add my scopes.

A few pictures to wet your appetite until I have the new bipod mounted and the Alpha Mount back (for this will use better scenery, natural lighting, etc)! Red looking scope is due to the camera flash :p

Re: My First and ONLY Rifle -- Pictures Page 1 --

Versapod showed up at my door... conclusions? Little better but I will leave final judgment for when I shoot with it again.

Atlas v7 will probably show up next week, I will be sure to do a comparison of both.

I also have some new pictures of the completed rifle, outside in the sun & fresh snow... so you can get a good idea of what the final product looks like, rather then washed out pictures because of the camera flash, or off colour scopes (no I didn't repaint it)
smile.gif
... I must say, with the scope on it, the bipod deployed, in the daylight, and standing back... in my humble opinion it just looks "right" to me. Really makes me feel like all the trouble was well worth it now.

I will hopefully have a "real" range report soon. Sorry if you hate me because I haven't yet, but I swear I am not blowing smoke up your asses :p

Some of you may or may not have noticed this, but in the pictures the bipod is on backwards.... my bad :p

FYI those scope caps can go any direction, I know the way I have them for the photos aren't "tactical" but I wasn't exactly concerned about it at the time

wow, that is extreme gun porn. And, more importantly I am glad to see that you are excited about it. Nice rifle and now all that is needed is a range report with pics.

Tell me what you think guys, had a lot of bad luck with the build, so bad you don't wanna know :p

Thanks, and yes I do need range reports :p Sadly, I will be shooting at 50 yards for the next week or so since my weekend is extremely busy and there aren't any further distances close by.

Re: My First and ONLY Rifle -- Pictures Page 1 --

What a beautiful rifle, for your first rifle. My first rifle that i bought and not given to me was a rem 700 .308 sps base model. your enthusiam is warranted with a stick like that. cant wait to see your range report.

Re: My First and ONLY Rifle -- Pictures Page 1 --

That's VERY Nice! I've had several SSG's but never one that was built around the SBS-style receiver. The accuracy will be impressive! Guaranteed. One of the things I really admired about my SSG's was that they would perform well with everything from 150gr. to 180gr. rounds. They say the barrels are a bugger to change (at least on the SSG69 variations) but they're chrome lined so should last well over 10,000 rounds.

Enjoy it... I'm just a little jealous! ;-)

Yea I don't think my shooting skills will do the rifle justice :p When we get out to Range Borden I plan on letting a couple of the pro F-Class shooters give her a go and see what she is really capable of
smile.gif

Yes, it looks like my rifle is ammo friendly, have fed it with the cheapest crappiest Hunting ammo (buddy had got it free), it shot like crap through his rifle, but mine it caused all the shots to touch... kind of took me back :p
Mind you this isn't the kind of ammo I would shoot normally... but is still nice to see she isn't picky about her dinner
wink.gif

Yea, I'm not sure how difficult the process would be to switch barrels, all I know is the maint. manual suggests to have it done by a gunsmith... but the manual suggests most every operation be done by a gunsmith :p Even the stuff that doesn't look to bad :p And yea I have heard stories of long barrel life ;P

Where do you find out information about the inner workings of your rifle? Is it just from owning them over the years?

Only reason I asked was that I checked out a load of grips for an upcoming AR project and was pretty disappopinted with the CAA - seemd poorly made and fragile compared to the MIAD or the old CAA G27. Was surprised to see it on your SSG as a standard part

Well then I don't think that's what they are... because these seem very well made... grip holds well, can take a beating, doesn't move around at all, rubber seems like "good" quality...

Re: My First and ONLY Rifle -- Pictures Page 1 --

Thanks spartan and wkrut, wait no longer here are my two!

!!!!!!!!!!RIFLE UPDATE!!!!!!!!!!

So we all known this has been a long time coming.

I'll start with my 50 yard indoor test:
I will talk about the 2 best results.
1. The first was using the Versapod that had recently been returned to me "fixed". Once sighted in and figuring out the zero leavers on the PR-H I managed to plant a 5 shot group measuring in at 0.3125", after applying the caliber (.308) that becomes 0.0045". That was measuring from the two furthest points of bullet impact. Don't believe it? I will happily post the proof later. No idea what this is in MOA.

2. The second was shooting off a pack as a means of comparison. Due to having not much ammo to work with (mostly due to trying to figure out the scope)... the next was a 3 shot group 0.5", after applying the caliber (.308) that becomes 0.192", so a little less then Half MOA.

Both were shot using $20 Federal Power Shock 150 gr.

Final conclusions: Versapod is much better now, and although it still hopped on a cement floor, it wasn't nearly as bad as it use to be. I would also consider it a better option then shooting off the bag.

Now onto the fun stuff, see below!

---

Went to Silverdale yesterday, was a beautiful day (was worried it wasn't going to be), nice and sunny about 0 Celsius.

My Rifle now has the Atlas Bipod on it, with proper scope, etc ,etc. I was so excited, everything finally put together and put together properly. Weather was nice with minor wind left to right(3-5 mph), sometimes dying all together. This would be my first time shooting 200 yards, and my second time shooting 100 yards (but first time with proper scope and bipod). I brought both my Atlas and my Versapod to test, but in the end didn't test the Versapod because I was so blown away by the Atlas. I also found that even though the Atlas was mounted to the bottom of the rifle and the Versa on the end of the rifle, I could actually get the Atlas lower then the Versa... pretty crazy!!

Anyway, today was the big day, would I succeed or fail? Was I still a good shooter or have I forgotten how to ride a bike? Will I be making excuses at the end of the day for the results I acquired like I was in the past? Could I live up to my Rifles potential? Could my Rifle live up to my potential? Did I waste a lot of time and money?

In short nope! What an awesome day, we started at 100 yards planning to zero it for 100... but decided against it due to the fact I ended up testing 3 different grains which included 155 gr HPS Target Master, 175 gr SMK GMM, and 168 gr SMK GMM. Unfortunately we were shooting off benches (I really hate bench shooting at Silverdale, half the rifle is off the bench, your chest is pushing into the bench, just very unpleasant and hard to be what I would consider stable, but I digress.

I started with the 155 gr using a VisiShot and aiming at the central diamond, this was a mistake (I'll explain shortly). First 4 shots were amazing all grouping within each other... I thought about leaving it as a 4 shot group since it looked so damned amazing! After debating it and getting out of position I said NO, a group is only a group if it is 5 shots or more at 100+ yards! Unfortunately that caused the final shot to go a little low, but still half touching the rest. The result? 0.625" - 0.308" (caliber) leaving me with a 0.317 MOA group! One Third MOA... nice. so far so good.

So lets try the 175 SMK's, well here is where things got challenging... I was now shooting at targets that were half the size of the previous target, this wouldn't have been a problem had I been able to see with illumination, but what I quickly learned was that illumination doesn't appear to work in direct day light all you end up seeing is the black reticule... at first I thought OMG something else had broke, but after returning home and testing it I was able to see the illumination. The problem was I was losing the reticule inside the black circle, and had no way to decern the center. Now you may say well Koshy use the hash marks and mildots to line up, DUH!! Well I would say sure... but half my rifle was off the bench and my rear bag hasn't come in yet (hopefully next week), so this left me unable to steady it to the point of perfectly lining it up... anyway sufficient to say I ended up with about 3/4 MOA for both of the bottom targets with the 175 gr SMK GMM's.

The 168 gr SMK GMM targets were even worse, getting about 1 MOA... now this could be due to the same problems as the 175's but it may have to do with the 168's not stabilizing properly at 100 with my rifle, which I was warned could potentially happen, and I believe there may be some truth to it (you will find out later why)...

So final reflections for 100 yards, 155 gr clearly have a lot of potential in my Rifle for 100 yards, 175 gr show some potential at 100, and I will save my reservations for 168 gr.

Things I learned: Use one standardized target for all shooting, especially for "tests". Make sure the bullseye is at least 1" in size. Try to use targets with white bullseyes or something other then black!

Now for 200 yards, my first time ever shooting 200 yards, damn am I excited or what!

So I asked Jeff, what ammo we going to use? 168 or the 175's, he said lets try the 168's. This time I was insistent on shooting prone I wanted ZERO EXCUSES after convincing Jeff to let his mat get dirty (bound to happen sooner or later) and the RSO's to let us shoot prone, we stuck ourselves between 2 benches. Setting up the rifle and myself was a chore as there wasn't much work to work with, I actually had to use the bipod tactically, and it worked great, the bipod was on about a 30-45 degree cant as there was a wooden panel on the right side and dirt on the left... it was just awesome
smile.gif
Once I got comfortable and all set up, Jeff was kind enough to help me zero in as we worked out how to communicate between MOA/Inches and Mils/CMs :p At the end of it, had it down pretty damn good
smile.gif

Once all was said and done, I fired off 2 strings of 3 at the center... and all I can say is whoa... when we finally got to go down range and check it I did a couple double takes when he told me the numbers... I basically told him to double check it a couple times, because it just seemed BS.... the target to the left was about 0.35 MOA... the second was an astonishing 0.25 MOA (half inch at 200)... now I know what your thinking... and probably saying, well that was just 3 shot groups... well personally I don't care it clearly shows my rifle is a shooter, and I haven't forgotten all my training (big thanks Jack.), that was good enough for me today, there is still lots of time left to do more in depth testing! Unfortunately I didn't bother taking down the targets after, but I have 4 witnesses to those values, take it for what it is worth, I mean yes this is the Internet... but next time I hope to have photo proof
smile.gif

Now it was Jeff's turn! I loaded up 10 rounds in the HiCap mag since we wanted to do do a little practice for precision matches. So what we decided is we would call out a target (left or right) and a side (left or right) and after the call you would have 2-3 seconds to take the shot. Worked out great, he had fun even though he was left handed and the rifle wasn't really set up for him :p It was my turn next, loaded the mag full again, and what a blast! Everything was smooth, the action opened and closed like butter, rounds feeding in the chamber smoothly, rounds ejecting back into the mat with a full throw, the bipod tilted and rotated with ease, after each shot I was back on target without having to move the rifle or the bipod (way it should be) between shots.

All in all, I had a blast, and cannot wait to get out there again and do some more testing!

Please note: The rifle performed flawlessly, with absolutely zero issues (no feeding issues either), scope also performed admirably, with zero tracking issues or anything else for that matter
smile.gif
. I found out the mounting solution for the bipod had moved forward a couple cm when I got home, but was quickly remedied and will be monitored... and hopefully isn't something I have to worry about.

Please note: All testing was done not taking the wind into account, although from my understanding 100-200 yards wind usually isn't a large issue.

Please note: No major proof reading as it is a looong post :p

Thanks for reading,
- Koshy

Very nice rifle. I had a look on one this month in Nurnberg at the IWA Show and liked it very much. BTW, I know exactly how you feel, bought my Sako TRG 22 recently and it will be my only precission rifle for a long time too. Congrats!

Congratulations, I'm sure you will be very pleased with it. Make sure you test the Versapod and make sure there isn't too much slop in it for your tastes, if you find it has too much slop, you cannot go wrong with a Harris or an Atlas... if you are looking to shoot off the sides of walls though, Versapod is the only way to go
smile.gif

Another good thing to keep an eye on is the cheek piece, if it isn't tightened down enough it may move forward until you cannot operate your bolt properly, but it is easily resolved by tightening down to 40-60 inch pounds.

Other then those 2 points, I see you having zero complaints!

Thanks,

Re: My First and ONLY Rifle -- Pictures Page 1 --

So, I did some reloading for this rifle for our friend here Koshy, and we discussed posting some loads up here incase other owners are curious of trial loads. Not only were these the first reloads he's shot out of it, its the first reloads I've ever made.

load1.jpg

load2.jpg

load3.jpg

load4.jpg

After we did all this, we moved on to shooting at 200m. Without this rifle being set up for a lefty (me), I uncomfortably managed to hit this, which was swaying in the wind decently at 200m, first shot, with 175 GMM (could have been 168). I thought it was pretty funny. It swung right around the post and ended up as you see here.

photo.jpg

I didnt yet have my comparator or anything like that. Gold medal match, we were measuring at 2.809-2.812.

I did a smoke test (first time) on the bullets to approximate where his lands were, since I didnt have the stoney-point setup yet, and determined his lands started around 2.823, so I used a 10 thou jump as a starting point, because it was closely related to federal gold medal, which shot good out of his rifle. Since I couldnt measure ogive easily to sort bullets, I at least sorted the bullets by length (I know sorting by ogive is the only way to go though)

Further testing should include at each powder load, jump, kiss, jam depths, but we didnt have the time, OR the amount of bullets. Why is ontario cleaned out of bullets? Once we realized this, we went around and bought up all the stock we came across
smile.gif

This was again, my first shot at trying this reloading stuff.

I am happy though, that I received in the mail today, the stoney point system, caliper comparator etc so we can be spot on.

Im also heading out tonight to buy a chronograph which should help.

Ill be getting my savage back friday, so its a repeat of this test sat morning with my rifle, and further tweaking with his.

**Note** At 44.3 grains of varget, we were seeing the primers starting to flatten. No sticky bolt lifts though. Since we're so green on pressure danger zones, Id like to do more reading, and have a better idea on signs of overpressure incase we push the envelope further.

Re: My First and ONLY Rifle -- Pictures Page 1 --

Anybody have any feelings on the results? See a lot of mistakes on my end for the shooting that may have made a specific group better then it was?

Was a real struggle with the wind that day sadly, fortunately we used the ladder test.

Knowledgeable input is welcome, especially to reloading experts!

Thanks,

Definitely looks like it will shoot. I notice you put down a 1/4 value 10mph wind, so the deflection at 100 shouldn't be a lot. Looks like you haven't forgotten how to drive and the gun/ammo combo is good. Vertical and horizontal stringing at that range in that wind is likely driver error - breathing and trigger control.

Have you found out how easy it's going/not going to be to change the barrel out when the time eventually comes?

Koshy,

Great thread! I'm a Steyr man myself... I have 3 Steyr Mannlicher Varmint Walnut Vented stock models that are beautiful. Might post photos of those later...

I just picked up my new hunting rifle... A Steyr Pro Hunter Stainless 7mm Rem Mag. While I was there picking it up, I got to hold and play with an SSG 08 .308. I was planning on saving up for the .338 with a Schmidt & Bender 5-25x56 and SAS Ti QD suppressor one day but that might be too expensive of a shooter. The .308 seems much more practical in initial cost and everyday shooting, even considering reloading. Would you agree? My store has the best price on the .308 SSG 08 and when I get my tax return I might just put it on layaway!

A few questions for you... I just ordered the Atlas V8. Why the V7? Was this an old post prior to the V8's arrival? What bipod comes with the SSG? It looks like a US made bipod of some kind. I saw a crude stamp which said, "US Patent Pending" or something like that. It looks like it may be a trasher.

Those Near rings look nice. I might take a look at them for my Pro Hunter. I'm leaning toward Badger 20MOA Picatinny and 30mm USMC rings for my future Schmidt & Bender 3-20x56 PMII when it arrives. Why did you choose Near?

Great photos and thread. I'd been surfing the AWSM for quite a while but have recently decided to go with the Steyr and keep my safe Austrian.

Finally, what kind of barrel is on the SSG? I thought it was threaded? Is it chrome-lined? Do you plan on running a suppressor on it? The SAS Arbiter and Vengeance Ti suppressors look great with the QD muzzle breaks. I spoke with Herbert Wohlmuth, Steyr's gunsmith. He is good to work with and very knowledgeable on the Steyr line. He told me the muzzle break comes off the SSG by a hex nut and backing off the lock nut. Then there is an 18/1 or 1/18 right hand thread. I spoke to SAS and he told me that they could thread the QD muzzle break to fit the SSG. What do you think?
