I was in the truck and getting on I95 South Saturday morning at 4:45 heading down to meet Robert Gradous and pick up my "new" rifle. I made it to Mr Gradous' place a little before 10:00. The next two hours were spent going over my rifle, mounting my scope, shooting my rifle, and talking to but mostly listening to a man that knows more about rifles than I do anything else. I couldn't have asked for anything else...maybe except for not embarrassing myself with my shooting. I can't say enough about Mr Gradous. He really is a great guy. Hell, the man even called while I was on my way home to check on me.
Ok, now for the rifle. I could not have been more pleased with how this turned out. Long story short, my rifle was butchered by a local gunsmith and in talking to Mr. Gradous about his Hunting Rifles, I mentioned this to him. He agreed to take a look at my rifle and see what he could do with it. Before everyone who reads this goes and calls him, I want to point out that I was EXTREMELY LUCKY to have him agree to do this for me as he is extremely busy building his own rifles for his clients. I also don't think he really works on Remington actions very much. Back to the rifle. He mounted the scope and we went to his shooting house to sight the scope in and shoot it a few times. He got the scope on paper and I shot a 3 shot group, which was embarrassing. He then shot a 3 group which was pretty good. I then shot another 3 shot group which was similar to his group. Finally he shot another 3 shot group which were all through the same hole. He very kindly told me I needed to work on my shooting and that my rifle was capable of shooting in the 0.0's. We were shooting my bullets that I loaded up Friday night. They are 208 AMAXs with 76 grains of H1000 in Norma Brass and Federal Match primers. The rifle is a .300 win mag. It used to be a Remington Sendero but I added a Manners T4A stock. Below is the work done by Gradous on my rifle.
Rebarrel with a Krieger 10 twist 26" M24 barrel
Little Bastard muzzle break
Badger bolt knob
Trigger (Timney) adjustment
Action truing (Gre-Tan)
Here are some photos. I will take more photos of the rifle with something better than my phone and post them down the road along with some groups once I have had some time to do some more shooting. With all the rain we keep having, the farm being a soup bowl, and the fact that I was gone most of the day Saturday...ie wife, I haven't been able to shoot the rifle as much as I had planned on at this point. In the picture showing the entire target, my first group is the top center and second group is the top left. Mr Gradous' first group is the bottom center and his second group (one hole) is the bottom right. Oh yeah, and he claims he can't shoot. I guess its ok to say this, but he thinks alot of Bob L Swagger on this site and claims he is a badass shooter. Down the road, I plan on having him make this rifle into a hunting rifle with a lighter barrel and different stock and have him build me a .260 or something similar for my steel and paper shooting.
