The railroad just re-did the tracks next to my house and I picked up a bunch of the plates that the ties sit on. I arc weld two side by side to make one set. Make two sets and weld them back to back (four plates total). While it's not AR500, I think the plates are work hardened from the weight of the train. They will pot mark a little but our 500 yard target has lasted several hundred rounds.
