Being that I am a moron sometimes and it takes me a couple times to open my gun safe, I needed a quicker way to access a firearm in a self defense/ home intrusion situation. But.....with 2 young boys at home I needed something secure. I looked at different cabinets and shit but nothing seemed to be more than a tin box with a 5 dollar cam lock, so I decided to build my own.
It measures 46" tall, 12" wide and 4" deep. 3/16" plate steel fully welded seams with 1" angle trim plug welded to dress it up a bit. I got a Medeco hardened cam lock and made my own cam and locking bars. I also welded 3/4" angle on the back side of the door to act like locking pins to prevent it from being pried open. The door lifts off to make it lighter for installation since it is heavy as fuck. Some gray carpeting finished off the inside and it's lag bolted to a stud from the inside.
It is probably way overkill but I had fun making it, and I am confident it will keep my knuckleheads and crack heads out. I screw an 18" barrel on my predator hunting shotgun for asshole duty.
