I've been in the process of rebuilding a Mauser rifle. I've finally got the barrel on and the headspace set. I don't have the scope mounted yet, but I had to run a round through it last Saturday. I mainly wanted to see what a 257 Roberts AI case looked like. It's a right neat looking round. Hopefully I'll be able to finish it up this weekend.

I tried to get a 1" 5 shot group @100y for 10 years and then in 2002 I put a Lothar Walther 257 2100 taper barrel on a VZ24 and reamed a 257 Roberts Ackley improved chamber. It 5 shot averages .8" with 72 and 75 gr bullets, 1" with 100 gr and 1.2" with 115 and 117 gr bullets. Mission accomplished

That was the first bottle necked cartridge I ever chambered. Now I have done ~ 3 dozen. It is still a good rifle, but @ 9.5 pounds without scope, sling, or bi-pod, it is a heavy rifle to hunt with.

Here is a 7mmMag I built in 2009 on a VZ24 action with a Lothar Walther 1300 taper barrel. It 3 shot averages .77" groups with 162 gr bullets. This rifle weights 7.5 pounds without scope and is easy to carry.

Re: My Mauser is coming together.

Your project sounds like it's coming along nicely, I'm still waiting for pictures though... **hint hint**

I recently accurized and rebarreled a mauser for a good friend, shoots like a hammer in 6.5-06, I'm cutting out of work early to go put some more rounds down the tube with him today.

His is certainly not going to be light, he went with 28" unturned blank from Shilen... the barrel weighs as much as my complete Model 7 with a scope on it!

Re: My Mauser is coming together.

I'll try to post a picture when I have finished it. Have any of you used CamoCoat finishes? If so I would like to hear some feedback on it. I'm still undecided as to what kind of finish to put on the metal and stock.

Re: My Mauser is coming together.

For a rifle that I'm spending a lot of time on cosmetic refinishing like most military mausers require, I like to be able to see the hard work I'm putting in. In light of that, and my personal taste is for a rich, high gloss blued finish and a nice piece of wood furniture.

I've built something that has been coated, and it's all personal taste of the builder. Depends what you're going to do with it as well, if you plan to hump it around the woods and slog through the elements then maybe a rich blue finish isn't the best idea.

This one is going to be for huntin' and bumpin' around. I did get the bolt cut for the Gentry safety today. It's been a long steep hill, but every step gets me closer to the top.
