Just finished up this build. Savage model 12 stainless with McGowen 26" bull barrel fluted by Kampfield. ChamBered in 22-250 with 1:8 twist to shoot the heavies. XLR Evo Tactical chassis, Atlas bipod, Blackhawk mount, ADM Recon mount and Vortex PST 6-24x50 FFP MOA scope.

Shooting 80g Hornady Amax's over 34g of Power Pro 2000MR, BR2 primers in Lapua brass. Magnetospeed say's 3210FPS 10 string average with a ES of 17. Ran it out to 1000 last week at MTC in Northern Michigan. 27 and change MOA got me consistent hits at the 1025 yard plate. I even corked the 3" gopher plate at 1030 a few times. Fuckin awesome .22!!!

Great post. DO keep us appraised of how this works out. I've been wanting to do a .22-250 AI to shoot the heavies for two years now.

80 grainers at 3200!!! Yeooow!

Possibly my next build.

I've never been a fan of .22-250 because of the lack of decent off the shelf guns, so it would have to be built and THIS is what it should look like. Kick ass!

Very nice rifle. l also built a .22-250 with a fast twist (Brux 1-8") and had it chambered for the 80 Amax. Running 34.8gr using Nosler brass I'm getting 3,217 fps. It is an absolute hammer. I've shot some tiny groups at 1,000 yds with it.

Specs:

Rem 700 (Blueprinted)
PT&G spiral fluted bolt
Badger knob
DPR recoil lug
Brux MTU 1-8" cut and crowned at 26"
DPR muzzle brake (ported only on the end of barrel)
McMillan A5A Brown/Black/FDE marble swirl
Surgeon bottom metal/DBM
All metal Cerakoted FDE

I have a lot of fun with this rifle. When wind is less than 10 mph, I am as accurate at 1,000 as anything I've ever shot. When barrel goes South I have a Chanlynn MTU in a 7 twist so I can shoot the 90 VLD's.

Thanks guys. I have just been geeked with this rifle. I may use it for deer hunting in Nov.

Nice rifle Jtrax. Not many like these around. Not only are they effective but cheap to load too. I got a box of 600 Hornady's for $90. They are as effective at long range as any other caliber if you have the speed and with absolutely silly recoil. It's like shooting a .22LR.

This is a great looking rifle pls. post picks of game shot with those 80gr A-Max at that speed. I have shot a lot of the 75 gr A-Max at only 2400 fps from my .223and they are great on game at that speed.

Thank you. My other rifles are mostly Surgeons along with a McMillan TAC .300 and an AI AW. My custom .22-250 built on a trued Remington 700 is just as accurate as my others. Action feels like a custom with the slightly oversized PT&G bolt (reduces amount of slop).

Problem is - I cannot find ANY 80gr AMAX's and I am out. I found some 80gr Berger VLD's which shot great but I am out of those now too and am unable to shoot this rifle due to lack of appropriate bullets. Any suggestions? I would be willing to shoot the 75grAMAX but cannot find those.

Question for all: with the speed the 250 case can produce, will my 1-8" twist barrel spin the 90gr VLD's enough to stabilize for accuracy? I can get plenty of those and if it will shoot them they should be amazing with a BC >550.

I would greatly appreciate any help or advice.

Hornady 75gr HPBT's seem to be a pretty good alternative. Not as good as the above, but pretty inexpensive and available from several sites. That's my plan for my Tikka. Not perfect, but should get me shooting well and quickly. At 600 and under they run similar according to JBM, and that's the longest range I have easy access too.

Would you mind a rough measurement of the total length of the knob? Love the look, just would like to compare to mine.

My 1 in 7 twist barrel stabelizes 90 vlds just fine. I have determined I like the 80vlds and the 82bt bergers much better. I wouldnt bother if I were you. That being said, I have a box of ~75 90gn vlds if you really want to try them out and cant find them.

I have heard others warning about all kinds electronics, including illuminated reticles and red dots. I would assume that it's a broad interpretation and I think that someone could explain how an illuminated reticle isn't advantageous but after living in California for 20 years, it wouldn't surprise me if someone has been cited for it.

Beautiful build... and I never would have thought a .22/250 would be able to reach out that far. But w. a heavy bullet and the right powder, I can see it performing at those ranges. Going to take some good wind doping... but anyone who can envision that rifle and put it together, will have no problem on that front.

No idea. Everything I have read says small bores high velocity = short life. But 3200 is no faster than a .223 and 600 less than the lighter bullets so maybe it will live long and prosper!

Thanks Sirhr. Interestingly my wind age at range where 3 MOA less than the 178 30 cal Amax. It's a long sleekassed bullet!

Nice build and thats hummin on down the road. I have had the 22-250 AI and 243 AI on single shot actions and devastated lots of varmints through the years with them. Would a AI case feed just as well in the magazine?

Mainly the part about Hornady not making the 80 grain Amax. Seasonal run. As I only have 500 left I hope they crank up production sooner rather than latter.

OP based in your results I'm working on some loads with the 2000MR. I got in the low 3200's with some 80.5 gr Bergers, but haven't gotten to shoot for groups yet

Casey, a couple guys I know up in peidmont run 22/47's with 37.5-38.5gns of h-4350 and the 80 vld. Getting around 3300 without leaning on it very much at all. I would suspect you could get them to around 3600 with a 22/47ai, but barrel life will suffer. Obviously spinning up a new tube is not an issue for you, but barrels don't grow on trees. They backed down to 3300 for extended barrel life.

One of my friends asked me to do a 22-250AI for him on a M700. I had several 1-9tw sendero contour Bartleins & Kriegers, so the 1-9tw was what he got. He was having H75AMaxes blow up at 3400fps after only a few rounds to get the bbl hot, using RL22. Switched to RL17, ran them at the same vel, but they stopped coming apart. Maybe RL17 has a longer, less abrupt pressure rise than RL22?

I was watching a coyote he'd called in to within 125yds through the scope on my AR when he whacked the dog with one of those 75s out of the 22-250AI - don't think I've ever seen a coyote get hit so hard. I swear, that dog smacked the ground so hard that he bounced back up, then collapsed without taking another step. Probably not worth a $hit for hide hunters, but it'll put 'em down...
