What’s up guys. Haven’t been in this section for years. So I was thinking lately that I don’t really have anything that’s in the middle so to speak, and would work well as the home security system too. I have my single shot air rifle. Or my RPR 308, in which I use 190 gr bullets that will leave an exit wound in both the intruder and my house. So due to the low cost, I went with a Remington 597 semi auto 22 lr which comes with a 3-9x32 Bushnell scope. Can’t wait to pick it up! The only thing I plan on doing is a nice wood laminate Boyd’s stock

No need. A .22 lr will shoot right through a 2x4 before dropping to a velocity where it will not be able to do it again. I don’t need to defend my home only to go def after one shot and then catch a murder charge or even worse kill one of my kids. The point wasn’t that it is the best home defense weapon and that’s its sole purpose. It was that it was a better option over the bolt action 308. Anyone who thinks a home defense weapon MUST be an AR15 or Mossberg 500 pump is just a little uneducated is all. Enough said.

Anyway, just wanted to share

Yep you got it all figured out

22lr is not the best option for home defence, but is a lot better than nothing.

I have a 597 that my father bought for me about 15 years ago. It was a absolutely jam-omatic sometimes jaming 7 out of 10 shots, mostly FTEs.
I installed a Volquartsen extractor and its been brilliant ever since, runs flawless now and has done for 8 years or so.

I also installed a Volquartsen target hammer to improve the trigger pull, it didn't make much difference until I polished the sear, the trigger pull is still heavy put is relatively crisp now.

I really like the 597, find the factory stock heaps better the you find on a 10/22 and the ergonomics are heaps better too. Shoots around 1" at 50yards which is good enough for its intedend use, but I haven't tried any match ammo in it.

Very glad you posted this. The ad said this rifle has both the Volquartsen extractor and hammer. Should be nice and smooth. Very good to hear
