Read the build thread and totally confused. bought this hoping to have a representative M40.
Remington 700, ser# A62xxxxx, AI coded barrel. No U.S. mark. Looks to have 5 groove heavy barrel, flat crown. Blued barrel marked with Remington legend and .308 Win. Drilled and tapped at rear of barrel and on the side of the receiver. Fiberglass stock bedded. Steel weaver style base. ARtII scope. Any advise?

Re: My Remington 700

Thanks. Did they ever even use an ArtII scope on any M40? I was wondering if it would be better to pull it off the gun and use it on something else, like maybe the T44 (early M14 style) rifle I have. Or would that be wrong? If the M40 is no where near the "correct" configuration, I could just put a commercial scope on it to shoot. I hate to admit my ignorance, but I know very little about post WWII snipers.

Re: My Remington 700

Misty: Great M40 ‘ish rifle. I like it!

First: Jim Leatherwood told me many years ago that he sent several ART II’s (actually ARTII+, same recital setup as used in the Redfield’s Accurange scopes) to the USMC for trial and evaluation. The corps apparently was not impressed and an order never materialized. So, no. They were not used. But, what the hell, it looks neat. I have one set up with a Leatherwood ARTII+. It’s not the greatest to shoot as these scopes are very difficult to achieve accurate ranging. (almost impossible!).

Second: There is a M40 Build thread, post it there, but be forewarned, these guys are fanatical in attention to detail. Even the sling swivels must be exact to earn their acceptance! But, we all appreciate every attempt to produce any M40 type rifle. Thanks for posting.

Re: My Remington 700

I would shoot it as is. If you don't like the scope then replace it with a commercial scope.

You could build it into a M40 clone if you wanted to, but IRRC the serial is in the wrong range and you would need to source a walnut stock.

Or you could just put a 10x on it and blast it with krylon spray paint (so you can't see the brown stock) and it will feel pretty close to a M40A1.

I like this option

Neat looking rifle as is and I would perhaps paint it and put a few rounds down range as is.

Re: My Remington 700

Thnaks for the advise. No, i don't want to get into it on the build thread. I had just picked this gun up in trade and if it's nowhere near right, it's no where near right. What do you think about putting the ArtII on the T44 I have to make a representative m21. Although the t44 would be too early for an M21. Than I could put the 10x on this one as you advised just for a shooter.
So it looks like I've got a bunch of bits and pieces. Heavy barrel m700, ArtII scope, and a t44 without the right optics.

Re: My Remington 700

Misty: The heavy barrel Rem 700 is a great example of what we did in the 80’s to replicate the USMC snipers M40’s (some of us are that old!). The brown McM stock is sure a desirable item. I would agree, mount something like a B&L 10x40 on it and take it to the range. Shoot out the barrel! Its not a spec gun but, I would sure love to have it!

The T44 you mention has my interest. Is this a M1 modified to take a M14 clip, or could it be a trials gun? Post some pictures of it (receiver markings!). Who knows, that might be one rare gun.

As to the ARTII, not desirable as a shooter scope, but collectable for sure!

Re: My Remington 700

Sorry, T44 is not real, wish it was. Built on an Armscor receiver but with a TRW 63 barrel, TRW bolt and all military parts. Has a really nice proofed T44 stock with M1 garand style buttplate and wood handguard, no telling where it came from. Just another representative piece but cool looking.

Yea, I think I'll pull the Art II off. I have an extra SWFA super sniper 10x42 that I really like that I could put on it. Any reason you've recommened the B&L 10x40?

Re: My Remington 700

Misty:The Bousch &Lomb (Not Bushnell!) Elite 4000, 10X40 was and still is a great scope. My son & I met the B&L Eng. Rep. at the shot show (8 or 9, maybe more ?) years ago. We told him that we had two and that they worked great for us. He told us that they lost money on every one they sold and they would be discontinued from their line (also, said that they had sold some to the Army and Navy (I guess at a list price of $1600+), but not the quantities that they had hoped for.

Currently we have four (bought the last one on the Hide for $650 last year (like new), I think many will say, old technology, their right, can’t compare to a S&B, NF, PR or others, but it is still a great fixed power scope for a reasonable price (if you can find one!). A review is posted at: http://www.snipercentral.com/bl10x.htm
We only shoot out to 600 yds. So the 10X works out. These are a completely different animal than the Bushnell 10X40. (My son is into the high priced scopes, but that’s another story!)

Re: My Remington 700

If you go with the 10x Super Sniper, you would have one representative of one of the navy contracts.

I would put the ART on the T44, not all units in Vietnam were all up M21's.
The M21's were built by USAMTU to very strict tolerances, other units built match grade M14's with various optics, including the old M84.

Re: My Remington 700

Gutowsky; yes, I know you were talking about the Bousch &Lomb scope, not Bushnell. But, sorry to disappoint all of you, but I'm not a long range shooter. I do hunt and appreciate good optics, but when I shoot, 200 yds max. I'm more into collecting military style weapons.
I thank you all for your advise. I think I'll swap a few scopes around and be happy.
As for camo-ing the stock, sound s good. Any advise as to paint, colors, etc. ?
I'l try to post some pics when I'm done.

Re: My Remington 700

I’ve completed four M40 type rifles and working on the fifth and sixth. Plan to make one a full spec at some time. On one (mil spec 5R, 24”) I’ve mounted a Kahles ZF 95. After pillar bedding and Devcon, added Flat Black Ceracoate to the action. . Talk about a laser!
Others have the Accurange/accutrack, a 8X16 Redfield and the Old ARTII+. Fun to shoot

I need to post some pictures when I have the time.
