Re: My rifle back from the "Smith"??PIC HEAVY!

Pretty fucking neat thing we have goin on here at SnipersHide. When one of our own gets a raw deal, its amazing to see all the folks step up to the plate to help make it right. You would be hard pressed to find better folks anywhere.

Re: My rifle back from the "Smith"??PIC HEAVY!

this pile of shit actually came from DD Ross? wow, and to think they were part of the evolution of the m40a3... and all the bases/etc they have made for those rifles... you'd think they could build one. I don't know what else to say except holy shit.

I'm glad to hear the rifle is headed out to a real smith, I look forward to seeing the pics of the rebirth. Hopefully the hack is not so bad it can't be returned to a near-spec clone. The reciever cut looks really high, as was said, so hopefully that will be easy to iron out.

gotta say props to wnroscoe for stepping up and making it right. once again, the quality smiths prove themselves with action, not banter. Skill talks, bullshit walks... and reverses charges on VISA, lol.

Re: My rifle back from the "Smith"??PIC HEAVY!

I've just been catching up on the thread and what has me distressed is it is the smith I thought it was. They provide parts for USMC rifles. Not sure if they have ever had any service time in their own lives, but from one Marine to another we should take better care of each other than that, and as much business as he does with the gov. he should know that

(name that movie)

Re: My rifle back from the "Smith"??PIC HEAVY!

This is very disheartening... I sent my barreled action to Dan I think the same day this thread came out to do a spec A3. He previously built my rifle 4 years ago and I think did a fine job. I will be having a lengthy discussion with him later today about my build and now that it's "known" ... This will be talked about... considering he has my shit...

Re: My rifle back from the "Smith"??PIC HEAVY!

I just got my barreled action back from Dan last Friday....it came out good save for he stamped a "0" over the old "8" on the barrel....was a 308Win and now is a 300Win...he forgot the MAG. But I like the rifle and I know that shit happens, I burned up a $800 timing light yesterday because I was a stupid fuck and forgot it was 12volt and used it on a 24volt machine!!!! Worked for a while then smoked!!!!

Point is is that shit happens and everybody fucks up....hopefully with that much credit to his name he would be past that and actually test fire each rifle and make sure it shot if he built the whole thing....probably would have found the brass issue and the walking.

Call me biased but he fucked up on a customer's rifle and missed it with Quality Control......but for people to flame on him personaly is not going to help shit....and truthfully if I decide to not bed my rifle myself I will probably get Nate Dagley or wait for GAP.

Here is my rifle.

Re: My rifle back from the "Smith"??PIC HEAVY!

I know what you are getting at Joe, but he knowingly sent this turd out the door, only to tell the customer that- "Ahh its only cosmetic, dont worry about it." That is simply over the top.

Joe, I'm glad you're happy with your rifle, but it's OBVIOUS that DD ROSS has no attention to detail....none. Any gunsmith that cared would have threaded the barrel in order to hide the 308 Win by facing it downward and restamped the 300 Win Mag the way it should be. Then he doesn't even send your trigger back? And you're defending him? I hope your rifle shoots well, but I'd be pissed. Maybe if he did test fire the rifle....even one round...he'd have noticed that it didn't have a trigger.

To let Jose's rifle out the door is more than just "Missing it with Quality Control" it's plainly called "Not giving a damn"

Re: My rifle back from the "Smith"??PIC HEAVY!

Thumbs up for wnroscoe!!! And you all thought Louisiana was just about New Orleans. We have a lot of outstanding folks here and he's one of em.

Re: My rifle back from the "Smith"??PIC HEAVY!

thanks for outing the guy.

mistakes like what happened with your rifle are completely unexcusable.....no matter who the smith.

Re: My rifle back from the "Smith"??PIC HEAVY!

As far as my trigger goes, he only had my action and barrel....so no way to safely test fire it.....honest mistake of forgetting I sent one with the action.

The barrel stamp really bummed me out but I also drive my $25k truck in the shit....so I know that the rifle will see use and to me it is only cosmetic.

But to send a complete rifle back that is FUBAR is not right. I like that GAP post's pool porn and test targets for all to see.....excelent QC. Bad deal on Dan's part but my point is that what good does everybody flaming on him when they don't even have a dog in the same state let alone the same fight?????

Bad deal all around for the customer, Dan should have offered to pay freight and have a smith that the customer trusted repair it if'n the customer didn't want to have him repair it.

Re: My rifle back from the "Smith"??PIC HEAVY!

I got another hide members pm yesterday saying how he went thru the same shit with this guy too.The rifle turned out so bad He made Dan buy the rifle back from him ,but only got back installments payments. To The guy with the missing trigger and wrong stamp, i hope your rifle is safe to shoot, try some go- no go gauges first if you can.It seems to me he does not test fire anything he builds but what do i know?Im sure he builds good parts for the Marine Corps? but putting together rifles is another story.

Re: My rifle back from the "Smith"??PIC HEAVY!

No rifle today, maybe tomorrow. I'm keeping up with everyones comments as we go. The moment I receive Jose's rifle I'll notify this thread, should be tomorrow. Jose sent the rifle Priority Mail. The mail here runs around 1300-1500 hrs.

Stay Tuned......................To Be Continued

When I was an LEO we used to say "No good deed goes un-punished" LOL

Thanks for the compliments guys, It really means a lot. Like I said earlier, I'm a shooter first and foremost, no more, no less. I'm glad I have an opportunity to lend a helping hand to a fellow shooter.

When I first came to this site I was blown away by the rifles and talent that was here. I had found the Mecca for Tactical Shooters. It’s opportunities like this that promote our sport and help to keep an interest in it. Snipers Hide truly is a great site and a tremendous resource for info. Thanks again guys.

Re: My rifle back from the "Smith"??PIC HEAVY!

yeah, but why give this hack any money when you can buy badger or williams and get what you need, some time this century, and have it be quality, from people who give a shit...

Re: My rifle back from the "Smith"??PIC HEAVY!

Well to say I was on the fence thinking about who I should have my first custom gun built by would have been an understatment. After reading this I will be investing my money with wnroscoe. Now where can I get 5000? Any one wanna buy a car?

Quick as it comes in I'm on it. You'll have news and photos the same day. If the burr in the chamber is all thats wrong, no sweat, it'll be GTG shortly after that.

Re: My rifle back from the "Smith"??PIC HEAVY!

No rush Bro, just want to hear one piece of good news, that the chamber is good.Or that the scrap yard gave you $1000 for the action.

Re: My rifle back from the "Smith"??PIC HEAVY!

I understand how you feel. While I cant say for sure without seeing it first, I think your going to be fine based on photos of your fired cases and what you've said about the way it shot. It's gonna work out one way or another.

Re: My rifle back from the "Smith"??PIC HEAVY!

won't it be a nice Christmas present to get it all fixed up? lol. I have confidence that it won't take Will too long to fix it up. He's not a shmuck like Ross.

we shall see how bad it really is, i'm anxious to see the pics once it arrives and gets cleaned up.

check the neck diameter in the chamber also. i am no expert (yet
grin.gif
) but that split neck has me concerned.

Re: My rifle back from the "Smith"??PIC HEAVY!

In a PM Jose told me that the fired necks were .344" (measured with calipers) and that only one neck split. His chamber neck could be anywhere from .343" to .345" depending on the accuracy of the dial calipers used. It should be OK as there were no buldges in the fired brass either. After all is checked out, and checks OK, I may fire a test round through it for giggles.

Re: My rifle back from the "Smith"??PIC HEAVY!

This is what's going to happen... Here are a couple copied PM's to Jose...
I did sell the base. And, I just spent an hour on the phone with Dan. I did not mention your rifle or anything. Here's what'a going to happen.... He built my rifle once and I was a happy. It shot 1/4 moa groups at 100 and the bedding was perfect. I just purchased a USMC A1 return stock from a member. We are going to do an A1 replica and this will tell the tale... When it's done. I'm giving him the chance to put out a quality firearm without anything being said... and we'll see what happens I guess... I am in talks with him about the specs and what is what and he is suprised I know what I know about the M40A1... So, we'll see in the future, it will be posted.

Matt

Well, after talking with him tonight, He will build it however I want, With the proper A1 clip slot.... So, we will see. He also informed me that he made duplicates of the original A1 scope base when Unertl was no longer able to supply them before they went to the 1913 rail... he said he has a couple in boxes somewhere... he'll find them... I told him to send me pics before I get the USO replica along with the MST-100. So we'll see... He told me he will build whatever parts I purchase... From what he told me.... He knows the specs... he even told me what receivers were stamped with U.S. above the serial number and it coincides with what I heard elsewhere...amongst other things he told me...He knows the exact shit.... So... Like I said .... time will tell and I HOPE it turns out good.

Matt

It will be a future follow up thread....
I have faith in the man and will give him the shot!

Interesting... I just measured a handful of cases that came out of my rifle chambered by Dan that measured, .343-.344.... And my calipers are NSK that came off the Snap-On truck... I had no issues whatso ever...with the brass

yeah well, he shouldn't go around churning out shit rifles by the truckload. Try to keep up with the times, man! this is nowhere near the first one we have heard about lately, most people just pussy foot around "not naming names" and shit. personally that is worthless to protecting consumers, but whatever.

I didn't mean to say Ross was a horrible person, I'm just insinuating that his priorities are not where they used to be. We'd all love to see him pull it together, and I hope other rifles turn out ok... I wouldn't want to be the guinea pig. Everyone says his shit USED to be great... so what the fuck happened?

and I stand by what I said, based on charging people $600 for bedding... COME ON... it's like $6 worth of devcon and enough time to make it worth about $200 at the max. Personally, I think most places charge way to much for this, but I realize it takes up time/space, so I get it... but to think that people should just bend over and hand you their VISA... and then to say horseshit like "it's only cosmetic"... that says alot about one's business ethics. For $600 it better sing and dance the fucking charleston. At least he manned up and tried to settle it, but this really should not be the same old story. old dog, old tricks?

Just my last little .02 here... maybe if he did better work, and charged about 1/3 what he does, he wouldn't have a can of devcon around so long it got "old"... but I still think it's piss poor work, not old devcon... the metalwork speaks volumes about that...

oh, and about that last little quip... you are what you eat.
