Rifle Scopes My S&B Scope Experience

I was finally able to pick up a S&B scope, came to me on a trade. It's A 5-25 PMII P4F reticle, mil/mil CCW with the MTC turrets. Before receiving it the previous owner told me he purchased it new this year and had not used it. The scope looks indeed brand new. But before he shipped it he noticed dirt in the reticle.

Knowing a company like S&B would stand by their product I told him to ship it to me anyways and I'd deal with getting it fixed. After it arrived I called S&B an told them about the issue. They were very helpful and apologetic. I promptly shipped them the scope for service. It was at S&B for about a month, really not too bad as far as I'm concerned. It just arrived back to me today.

So far so good........ Loved the customer service attitude and response to my problem.

When I looked through my newly repaired scope I could see the original dirt was indeed gone as expected. But not too far from the original speck is a new smaller speck of dirt. WTF?? Do I just have terrible luck or is this typical of S&B?

At this point I don't feel like dumping another $45 into shipping it back for a month to be cleaned again. So I'm going to live with it. I've owned many scopes in the past from all the big names and have never seen dirt in a single one of them. My first $3400 scope and I can't seem to get away from it.

Did you try hitting it on a phone book?

The old phone book trick.

Grip it like a club & give it a good whack against something solid like a phone book and the dirt will shake free & stick to the grease inside. Or mount and shoot it and the recoil should do the same.

I also suggest the phone book trick. It works like a charm without the cost and wait.

Wow, is that common for S&B? I've lusted after one for years and I would be pissed if I spent that kind of cash and had this issue. Not to mention sending it in and not being fixed. I don't know that I could just whack a $3400 scope on a hard surface.

I too have never seen this type of thing in "lesser" optics. Maybe the glass isn't good enough to see the dust specks. lol

Owned many S&B scopes and I have never experienced anything foreign in any of my S&B glass on the contrary it always looked the most pristine from any other brands. I'm surprised by this, but Jerry and S&B will take care of you.

I hope everyone understands my original post, S&B is world class on the level of customer service. I just am shocked that the scope came back with a simular issue to what it went in with.

I feel better and I still lust after a S&B. Was worried when the first three responses said whack it on a phone book like it was normal practice.

It is. It has been recommended for getting the debris off reticles for several manufactures. Is it necessarily cool? No. Good on S&B. Awesome CS, as would be expected!

It's pretty normal practice. Particles inevitably get into the scope tube here and there during assembly. Scope tube inners are typically lined with a grease compound that will catch the misc particles that made it in.

Sometimes solid recoil will cause a particle to set free & get stuck on the etched reticle ... so we just whack it to get it off the reticle & back onto the grease.

S&B service is first class and they'll take care of it, but if the phone book does the trick, it saves the time lost from having to send it in.

Jerry is the guy you want to talk to. He's a straight shooter and will get it taken care of for you.
