My Savage 10 FCP-K .308 Long Range

I posted pics of my Savage 10 FP-SR a month ago and only had it a month till i saw this one at a gun show here in Montana. The FCP-K .308 was the one I wanted al along but couldn't find untill the gun show so i couldn't let it pass. Heres my mostly complete build on it for a budget long range rifle.

New stock to come and maybe bottom metal upgrade.

Im happy with it. I love the features and the reticle, Just wish it was a little sharper in the 20+ powers. Still good though.

Do you like the muzzle brake on the K? Since I have the SR, I ordered a Rat Worx Big Chubby and the recoil reduction is incredible.

I love those model 10s I just bedded an FCP McMillan, and with very little load development its shooting consistent .5 MOA groups. I haven't yet done phase II of my initial ladder test, but it's got a very wide 'sweet spot'.

I love it, i never shot it without but the recoils just a little harsher than my .223

Had one for a short period, was deadly at 300 yards, .5 moa with Nolser Custom Competition 168 and 43.0 grains of Varget. Nice looking rifle, Slip.

How far out have you shot this rig and what types of groups are you getting? I am in the market for a .308 and the Savage 10 is on the top of the list.

I have shot 400 yd with is just for fun, not trying real hard and i got less than 2in at 400. I know its capable of better. My best at 100 is a 3 shot group under a 1/4 moa with federal gold medal 7.62x51 175 gr match ammo

Wow that is an excellent group. Going to keep an eye out for one of these now. Mainly was looking for a 6 or 6.5mm gun but a .308 with a brake should be perfect for the fiance to shoot. What would you say the recoil is like? .223? Mild .243?

Havent shot a .243 for a while but i would say its very close. Just a little harsher than my .223

I wish Savage would have made this barreled action with the bolt release in the usual area as opposed to the front of the trigger guard; this has been a bit of a pain in the ass when searching for aftermarket stocks and DBM. XLR does a chassis that allows for the trigger guard bolt release, and Choate has a Varmint/Tactical stock that will work also...

The new 10FCP-SR appears to be what the fcp-k should have been all along...it's almost the same rifle with the exception of the DBM.

Pretty much. I agree on the bolt release. All of my savages untill now had the save lever on the side. Dont see the point of this one but minor details on such an amazing rifle. My friend at work has a .308 he has custom built from the round up and has developed his own hand loads for and I can still group just as tight as him whatever range we are shooting. and im shooting factory loads. ha

My friend at work has a .308 he has custom built from the round up and has developed his own hand loads for and I can still group just as tight as him whatever range we are shooting. and im shooting factory loads. ha

No offense meant, but unless you're shooting match ammo, that just means he's just reloading ammo and not "developing" a load. There's a HUGE difference. It takes many hours of development (bullet type, barrel type and length, rifling, powder type, brass type etc...) that goes into "developing" a load. This means loading and shooting MANY types of loads with minute differences until you get the most accurate round for "your" rifle. That's the difference of people reloading for cost vs. those of us reloading for accuracy. Oh, and all my rifles are Savage I'm a die hard lol...

Kevin Rayhill can fix that bolt release for you. I had him change mine when he T&T my action.

Well I am trying savage now for long range. Have a Sightron 8-32x56 S-11 with McMillian stock. My Remingtons are not what they could be anymore.
I ran some 155 gr. SMK and IMR 8208 XBR but I had them a little hot @ 45 grs. There are so many load to develop may 4064 next trip to range. Could I get some input on this issue (save powder and bullets) you know. I shoot 2>3>4>5 hundred yards paper .

I have the same scope. At the price point, it's unbeatable. My only issue so far is the relatively short "eye box" for me (I.e., the short distance for which I get a good complete sight picture, as compared to a longer range of distance for my NFC). Nevertheless, it's a great scope for the money...it makes the Razor a real candidate for future rifles.

Man that's crazy, I just bought that same model rifle this weekend, same rail, same bipod. Ended up with a Vortex Viper 6.5-20x50, so I guess I got the little-brother of your scope. Waiting on the scope to be delivered so I haven't been able to shoot it yet, but I can't wait. Glad to hear everyone is having good results with theirs. Seems like the Savage model 10 is hard to beat right now.

Did the stock come camo like that, or did you paint it? The accustock seems OK, but I'm getting tired of all my rifles being solid black, something camo would be cool. I thought about seeing if someone with a 10PC with the digital camo stock would want to trade with me, but I don't know if they would swap well since I think the barrel contours on those two models are different.

Also, it looks like I'm going to need to remove the muzzle brake if I want to use it in any competitions like NRA F-class. Does anybody know where I could get a thread protector for it?

I will be shooting Sierra Match King 175 grain on top of Lapua brass to start. I am fortunate that I have 3 ranges in my area. the range I will shoot most of my practice at is a beautiful 500 yard range. There are a number of 1000 yard ranges that are available for same day driveability as well. I am very impressed with Ridgeway gun club. they have steel targets.

I do have one question; what height of ring did you use? Ring height is very important to me. Weaver offers low, medium and high rings. i am fairly large about 6'1' tall and about 250 lbs. I want to select the proper ring heigth that will give me the most comfort and accuracy.

I will be posting this in the Optics Sticky as well.

Any direction you can offer is geatly appreciated.

You are probably going to need the High Rings. I have that base and rings in Medium height for a 40mm scope so with the 50mm you are using you're going to need the extra height.

I ran a Bushnell Tactical 6-24x50 in Burris XTR lows on a Weaver 20MOA base and it worked just fine, even with Butler Creek caps on.
