My starter setup getting into longer range..

I am looking for a new stock and need suggestions..

My rifle is the Remington 700 Varmint
Nightforce 20 MOA Steel Base
Nightforce 30MM High Steel Rings
Osprey 10-40 X 50 Glass

Needs a new stock pretty bad but it's sub MOA so that's not too bad.

So what can I do to improve this rifle that's not too expensive?

I reload all my ammo and it seems to like the 168 Gr SMK's...

Eventually want to take this out to 1000 but I know it will need a new stock for sure.

What's your budget? Budget-wise, HS Precision Take off stocks can be had for cheap. B&C is another cheaper upgrade that seems popular. Manners and McMillan are probably the next step in fiberglass. Look into a bedding job as well if you're looking in ultimate accuracy. Chassis systems are a worthwhile consideration at that point too, they tend to be a little heavier though.

Agreed or McMillan but I'd save a little more for an adjustable cheek piece to be added on. I'd also get some low mount scope rings so you can get a better cheek weld. Then a Timney trigger and eventually have the stock glass bedded.

Further down the road blue print and true the action and upgrade the barrel.

Fact is though if your getting sub moa then you can get to a 1000 now if you do your part, the upgrades will help you do it more consistently though.

Getting new rings at this point is not an option, I probably should have ordered medium, I had been told high was needed for 50MM and heavy barrels.
I think a new stock with a cheek piece is a better option since it's cheaper than getting another set of 120 dollar rings..

Even with an adjustable cheek piece you'd be hard pressed to get enough adjustment range to get a good cheek weld with those rings. I would take a loss on selling those highs and get some lows. If you have to do it further down the road then so be it but I would not want to run those for any longer then I had too.

What's that scope like? I've never heard of Osprey before.

Thing is, the bolt handle already comes so close to the scope when cylcing that I don't think I could go any lower.. I have a cut on my thumb from it catching the scope cycling the bolt..
I haven't noticed any cheek weld issues.

The osprey isn't a bad scope for the price, I think it was about 300..

Looks like you need to get a bigger bolt knob installed too.

Back to the stock, as it was mentioned above, you can get a manners for around 500 but they still have to be bedded to achieve maximum accuracy potential. And, if you ever want to upgrade to a DBM then it has to be inletted. You could go with a manners mini-chassis but that is going over your $500 price point. You could also get a Bell and Carlson or HS Precision and put the rest to new rings.

Wow that chassis is awesome.. I play golf as my real time thing and do this on the side... Going for a scholarship.


I've got a 3000 bag setup in golf...


I wish I had a 3000 rifle setup here..

I've gotten a few PM's about stocks.. I really like this HS Precision stock so far.

Get a Bell & Carlson A3 "Hook" or M40 Tactical Stock (Both around $200) then get a adjustable cheek piece ($35) and be down with the stock part. B&C has the aluminum chassis in their stocks so you can get away without bedding, and use the rest of the funds somewhere else! Good Luck!

IMO you'd want rings that will give a good cheekweld and eye relief. You want to fit the rifle to you. I would go to a store and see if they would let you test fit different sets of rings. Find a ring height that will fit you right.
