When: 9 July 2011
Where: Range 10 Butner NC
Cost: $45 per-person
Round Count: 60 but I would bring ALOT more for after the match shooting.

COF

Pop-up targets out to 1000yds, precision rifle needed, match ammo also.

Targets will be hit / miss computer controlled scoring on a timer

Points: each distance of the target divided by 10 <span style="font-weight: bold">EXAMPLE : 250yds = 25pts per hit, 500yds = 50pts</span>

You will be ranked by the hit ratio of targets presented to you, and the amount you hit, and the point value of the targets you engaged. <span style="font-weight: bold">EXAMPLE 30 targets you hit 20 = 66% hit ratio</span>

Scoring will be based by hit ratio and points the highest of the two wins.

Also we will have a bonus scoring. We will set the round count to reflect the target presented to you a 1 for 1 ratio. we will add a extra 6rnds to the round count. If you clean the targets, each extra round you have will be worth 20pts each bonus. These bonus points only count if you clean the whole target spread.

we will also have a moving target stage as well between 300 and 600yds.

Looking forward to this match in two weeks! Pop-ups out to 1k and movers out to 600yds...oh my! John's matches are always fun but challenging and will quickly show you any deficiencies in your skill set or kit. Butner is a great facility to shoot at. If you're within a few hours of Raleigh consider making the drive over for a fun day at the range.

This looks like fun. I just had both of my rifles apart for various reasons. If I can get a zero session in and then load some more ammo between now and the match I will try to make it.

Is it beginner friendly? Im fairly new to match shooting that is why I ask. I wont be participating in the july match but would like to give the August one a shot. Am I allowed to come out and watch? And as for the "fun shoot" after the match, do you have to actually shoot n the match to participate in this?

Great questions.

Yes Juniper Swamp matches are the best way for a new person to gt in the sport.

You can come and watch, thats fine but I would bring your rifle. After the first relay you will want ot shoot the match.

To participate in the open range is only for match shooters. The range day is open for the people that help me pay for the lease of the range. I do not think it would be fair for them to pay $45 and let someone walk on without paying for the lease.

Hope you can make it and if you do, bring your stuff. You will want to shoot in it.

Thanks for the quick response. Its a 2.5 hour drive for me so if I come, Ill def bring my rifle. I saw where the match is limited to 40 people. Say I come, and decide after the first relay Id like to shoot, but the match is already "maxed out"... Im assuming I wont be able to participate, correct? Also, if I come to watch and decide after watching that I'd like to give it a go, is it going to be too late to pay the fee or do I have to pay the pre-payment of $45 before the match. Sorry for all the questions. I just want to make sure that if I show up and decide to shoot, I have everything planned out and I dont look like "that guy"

You will be fine.

I am not near max for people to shoot the match.

Keep in mind, every single person at the match was the new guy once, at these matches we have alot of new shooters and thats great.

We do out best to help new shooters out and in this format is very simple. This would be a great way to get rolling so come on out, give it a swing.

No matter how it turns, you will learn alot and get to know some great people.

You guys are going to have a BLAST for your first match.

UPDATE:

I talked to the head NCOIC of Butner today. We MIGHT, have to share the range after 1400.

That is a MIGHT! There is a US Army Reserve unit that needs to qual with M249's. They will be on range 4, and they asked if they could come over to give the Soldiers trained up and qual'ed.

I told them that is fine, for them to shoot will not take more then a hour or so if they even show up.

But the match will be over before 1400 and this will be part of our open range time anyhow.

I assumed you all would not mind sharing the range with the US Army with machineguns.

Rob and I will run the qual for them and then get back to our shooting ASAP. I also think it will be a good time to take a break anyhow.

Bunsen is correct. We do have slots open. so come on out. No matter the type of reticle you have, the cost to shoot the match is worth the lessons you will learn on the range alone.

Not even talking about the ability to meet the best people the state has to offer and the side line discussions on a topic we all love.

If you have a shooting blanket or a tarp bring it. Its raining like crazy and the berm will be wet grass, mud all day tomorrow.

If you have a good tarp, we can put it down and be good to go.

The next match is set fot the 27th of August and if possible I'd highly recommend penciling this match in! This is a very unique and fun venue to shoot at.

I'll let John further detail the CoF, scoring and results, but essentially the targets pop up at random distances and locations. You have a limited time in which to estimate range and neutralize them (multiple shots allowed). The target size is 40" tall x 19" wide so they are not tiny by any means. However, don't underestimate the challenge of locating then getting on target, estimating the range, making a wind call, and finally breaking the shot in a very short time period. Also, dependent on the target location (relative to the shooter) there may only be a partial upper torso shot available.

The best analogy I can come up with is that this is akin to varmit hunting prairie dogs on a big open field or a game of whack-a-mole with your favorite boomstick. Except that these are a little bigger than woodchucks, green, and don't stick around very long. Just as fun to shoot though!

I just wished I hadn't slept through both my alarms and showed up too late to compete.

Still,I did have a great time working out my DOPE to 800yds, working on my wind calls, shooting the mover, and well just shooting after the match (both the targets and the BS).

If you have never shot a competitive LR match before this match is HIGHLY new shooter friendly and an excellent opportunity to dip your toes in the LR competitive shooting game. John and Rob are excellent instructors and will be happy to answer questions and help a new guy get squared away.

John and Rob- Thanks for a great day at the range today! Shooting these random pop-ups and movers was humbling today. Shooting them with unlimited time is one thing but knowing that they might disappear at any moment really added some stress to the situation. I learned a lot. I'll be back in August for sure. As always excellent pic's Bunsen! You missed a great class today well worth the time but man was it a cooker!

The JST matches are always a highlight to my shooting matching and some of the most fun and learning. The guys really do a great job every match of incoorporating the challenges that enforce the core long range skills you need to practice to maintain. It is also great to see "IVAN" go down especailly the mover

Outstanding match and looking forward to the next one at the farm or Butner!!!!

Had a great time. The course was very humbling to say the least. If you have never shot limited exsposure targets then I highly suggest that you take time and come see what Trace Armory has to offer. Met alot of great shooters there,want to give out a shout to Paul T. for letting several of us get some trigger time on the SBR and 300 mag with the U.S. OPITICS thanks. John runs a first rate match thats alot of fun. I can say John wants each student to come away from his matchs having learned something. Just don't ask him the size of an 8inch circle,lol,lol, had to be there to understand. Thanks to Rob for running the compterized targets range.
