Neck turning tool do you use?

Re: Neck turning tool do you use?

Hmm....no expander mandrel...no indicator...not condusive to an accurate neck turner.

If you want to turn necks pick up a tool that will do it right.

You should be looking for something that you can get an expander mandrel with, and if possible, a dial indicator.

Look at K&M Shooting Neck Turners. Ive used one for a little while now and absolutely love it.

Re: Neck turning tool do you use?

I enjoy reloading and increasing my skill with it hence why I turn necks. Plus I shoot LC brass and it kinda needs it. Should have gone with Winchester or Lapua brass if I wanted to skimp on neck turning

Re: Neck turning tool do you use?

It all depends on if you are shooting benchrest or not.

If you just enjoy reloading then rock on. I find it a bit of a waste to turn necks for a chamber that doesn't need it in a rifle that is capable of 1/2-1/4 MOA with factory ammo.

Lots of folks get caught up in steps that aren't necessary for the type of shooting we do.

I got one of these too, big time +1

Turning necks is not a waste of time, but it is also not required in our game, I'm not going to turn all my brass, I have some that no matter what I do the run out was more than .005, I annealed that brass and hit the high spots with my NT, run out went away, I bought the tool because I'm too cheap to throw away anything that still can be used.

This belongs in the reloading section!

Re: Neck turning tool do you use?

Well I was in debate weather to put this in the reloading section, but I am more curious to the equipment aspect of neck turning cause I already understand how and why we neck turn just not sure what is the best neck turning tool

I couldn't agree more.
IMHO, a perfect example:
BR shooters use tight neck chambers, turn necks paper thin, go to all extremes in case prep, bullet selection (mostly custom that no one else has heard of), etc. The guns are single shot actions, glued into stocks and have load ports on one side and eject on the other (so they can shoot in the same condition faster). I have seen 6PPC rifle turn in a .0 something group on one target and a 1" or more the next. Why? After all, they went to the extremes in many areas.
Bottom line, it's all about shooter skill. Almost anyone can shoot that little group with no wind, mirage, etc. It takes mastering more than neck turning to make the shot when conditions aren't perfect.

Also, to the OP, consider the true cost of using lesser brass and spending the time and money to "make it right" compared to buying the best brass right off the top.

Re: Neck turning tool do you use?

Well I posted this as a question about the equipment used to turn necks and learn some pro cons of these different tools. I understand the differences in different styles of shooting and know that I am making ammo that is better than me, but who on here isn't guilty of having a weapon or optic more accurate than their skill?

At the moment I use the RCBS neck turning tool but as pointed out it doesnt have a gauge to measure the runout which would be nice. After some more research I have come across the Hornady Gauge:
http://www.midwayusa.com/viewproduct/?productnumber=220200
but since this works on loaded ammo then it wouldn't cut the inside of the necks. Is this still a good tool? or is one that cuts both inside and out more desirable.

BTW I tend to stay away from hand trimming and run out tools.

Re: Neck turning tool do you use?

In answer to your actual question, if you need the neck turning gear, it's either K&M or Sinclair.
Sinclair also offers anything you need for precision reloading. I have seen tools that are designed to fix run out issues on loaded rounds there too, though I don't know how well they work.
Turning the inside of the necks is not the way to go, if that is what you're taking about doing.
