How about a bushnell 10x mil dot for about $220 from midway or the mil scope for $250 or so? I believe it has 80 minutes of elevation, the super sniper has 100 minutes of elevation but a thicker reticle!
Mount - Smith Enterprise or Sadlak $200+
Rings - I used Warne Steel QD - $65 (think thats what I paid)
Scope - I run a SS 3-9 FFP $500 (used or sample list)
Done for under $800 - not sure if thats what you consider "budget" but its what I started out with. After getting frustrated with the whole "chin weld" problem I tried several lace up and velcro cheek risers and they were a waste of money. I have since ordered a JAE 100 Gen 2 stock they way I want it. Be warned - this project will set you back if you wanna do it right. If you wanna do it on a budger, buy quality items one at a time and work up to your desired end state. For sure don't skim on the mount - get a good Steel - Smith or Sadlak - I like Sadlak - and work from there. If you get a cheapo mount your just tossing money in the trash.
I'm running the Weaver Tactical Grand Slam 3-10x on my M1A. It's a good scope for the money, it does everything I need it to do, and I have been exceptionally pleased with it. Especially for only costing $299.
Gent before me suggested a Weaver tactical 3-10 thats $299. You may want to check out the Nitrex by Weaver TR2 scopes at www.natchezss.com While not tactical scopes, they are basically Weaver Super Slams priced anywhere from $140 to $290 after the Nitrex $100 Rebate. They are discontinued models that had Retail prices from $460 to $720. Optics in TR2s are very good. For example, I had a Zeiss Conquest owner view thru my $218 Nitrex from Natchez and tell me it was just as bright and clear as his Zeiss that sells for about $850. Nitrex and Weaver are owned by ATK and both have same address for Warranty work. Natchez also has discontinued Nitrex TR1s for lower prices too and they are basically the Weaver Grand Slam scopes.
