Need a good backpack for day hiking on vacation.

Love my 5.11 Rush 12. Good size for a day pack without being too big. Used mine just about daily since 2012 and its held up extremely well. Folds out flat to access your stuff quickly and stays high on the back when cinched down. Zipper pull recently broke, but paracord fixed that fast.

Only downside I’ve found is when you really pack stuff in it (multiple textbooks/binders, or folders/roll of yellow police tape/FAK/water), it can stick out kinda far from your back. Because of this, it does not sit upright when you sit it on the ground. Another might be that the venalation is negligible, but I haven’t extensively used another pack to compare.

Overall I’d buy again. I was hesitant to drop $115 on a pack going into my first year of college, but it has served me extremely well.

Bought one of these from London Bridge when they have their sales at good savings....

Its a good family day pack, my only complaint no side pockets for a water bottle.

Ive added an IFAK, bino case and pocket for water bottle which kind of makes it look like its covered with warts but it works.

The main thing about it is its made in USA and built like a brick shithouse. There is lighter materials out there if that is a concern...

Sign up for the news letter and buy when on sale. That list price is nuts.

It’s pricey, but that Goruck GR1 looks awesome. I love the clamshell opening. If you are vet or first responder, they give 25% discount.

As mentioned above, LBX makes great gear.

How tall are you?
What's your budget?
Where are you located?

I'd suggest that you have a look at:
Osprey
Dana Designs
Mountainsmith
Mystery Ranch
Callback
REI
Cilo
Six Moon
Coaxsher modular SAR

For hikes under 5 miles, in good weather, I prefer a Mountainsmith butt pack with shoulder straps. Plenty of room for minimal gear and a pistol and two pouches for water bottles. For longer hikes I use my Coaxsher SAR pack which has detachable modules that you can pick for more volume. It's also super comfortable and light.

I am 5'11"
Budget is $150 or under
I'm in Nebraska so we only have the standard Cabela's, Bass Pro or Scheels around here so I figure I will need to order something.

I have been looking at the Osprey Hikelite and the Deuter Airlite series a bit. I will be only be hiking about 10 mile at a time so it doesn't need to be too big and good ventilation for my back is important to me.

I would go with badlands if your military/Leo you get a 50 % discount. Their product has a lifetime warranty and will fix it no matter what happens to it. I have one of their packs been using it for 2 years now and have no issues

If it will be used mostly for hiking, I recommend the Osprey Stratos in whichever interior size that makes sense for your carrying needs. If you will be mostly using it for EDC, then the Hikelite is probably a better call.

My go to bag for day hikes, or a quick overnighter on the trail, is the Stratos. The waist belt on the Stratos makes the difference on hikes. My Stratos turns seven this summer and is going strong - and it has been used extensively.

Osprey has a great lifetime warranty, as well!

I narrowed it down to 3 bags. I couldn't decide so I ordered all 3. Osprey Hikelite 26, Gregory Citro 25, and Deuter Futura 24. After receiving all 3 of them and trying them all out I decided on the Deuter Futura 24. Thanks everyone for all the good suggestions.

I too went away from military packs. My go to for the last four years is an Osprey 44. Works for everything from a 12# water carrier to 50+#. Though I won't shop REI anymore, you can go there ( msybe anyOsprey retailer) and use their fitment tool to get the right pack/frame for your torso. A good fitting pack with no pressure points makes such a big difference.

I bought a Jansport Watchtower when we went to Disney World with the kids. Perfect daypack for our needs. The side pockets each hold a 40L Takeya Thermoflask bottle perfectly and have straps to cinch them tight. Highly recommend the Takeya’s....the lid is awesome and really makes the bottle. Walmart sells a rectangular freezable gel lunch bag that fits like a glove inside the main compartment as well.

I carry a 15+ yr old Grogory 40L pack for day hikes and such. It carries great with loads to 50 lbs (climbing gear weighs a lot).
Osprey are used by many of my high mileage friends as well.

For big loads and long days I use Kifaru.
