I am getting ready to order bullets for reloading and before I commit the cash, I wanted to get some opinions here.

Setup: Rem .308 26" 1:12

I have shot the SMK's in 168 and 175 with really good accuracy but am hearing now about the scenar 155's

I plan on continuing occasional matches out to a 1000.

Thanks in advance

Re: Need a little advice on bullets

I shoot only the 155 Scenars, I think the speed there going trumps the 175's, that is 2700 v 2950+, they really don't have a BC advantage over the 175's, they suck for hunting because of there thick hard jacket, but those are the only downsides I see, I have tried IMR4895, but did'nt like the temp swings I was getting, RL15 works good, and I can get the same speed with about the same amount of powder.

Win Brass
Plano Fed 210
46.6 IMR4895
2.86coal
2960fps

Lapua Brass
CCI BR2
45.9 Reloader 15
2.86coal
2965fps

I'm doing load development tomara with Win\BH brass for the Cup, I hated leaving Lapua brass on the ground at the Bash, also I coat my pills with HbN.

Re: Need a little advice on bullets

They have about the same BC as a 175 SMK (it's advertised as higher, but that's a bit of marketing on Lapua's part). So just imagine taking your 175 load and pushing it a couple hundred fps faster than it's currently going, while at the same time having a triffle LESS recoil. It's not going to cut inside a 6.5x284 or anything like that, but it certainly is more forgiving than the 175 in both drift and drop. Also powdervalley will sell them in lots of 1000 for the equivalent of about $27/box.

Damn that HbN must REALLY cut down on the pressure. I was loading 45.5gr @ 2.86 using Rem 9 1/2 and getting a little bit of extractor wipe when the temps climbed above 90*.

Currently I'm playing around with ~44gr H4895 and just trying to get a good accuracy load coming in around 2850 out of my 22" Rock. I find it interesting that I'm getting pretty much the same velocity with everything from 44.7gr (moderately to heavily compressed in virgin Lapua brass) all the way down to 44gr (very lightly compressed). I could list the velocities, SD, ED and AV for 3 different 15shot strings and you couldn't tell me which was 44, 44.4, and 44.7. Accuracy has been improving as I dropped down, though. I think I will dip as low as 43.6 next time out and see how that does. It's velocity during the single-shot pressure checkup really was pretty close as well (~2870 for all)

You are now pushing into the 300 win mag territory. I may be wrong here but I don't think you have enough casing to house the powder in a 308 cartridge to push a 175 SMK to 2900 fps.

Re: Need a little advice on bullets

With 46.5gr of Rl 15 and a Bartlein bbl unless my chrono and others are wrong that is what i am getting. With a 190 SMK were getting 2800 to 2820 with a 208 AMAX they run 2680. These have been shot over more than one chrono.

Re: Need a little advice on bullets

I shoot 175 smk's hpbt and they are freaking awsome i use them in my 300win 700p. incredible groups from 100-1000yrds and in between. You cant go wrong with SMK. I am shooting 3 shot literly on hole groups with them.
