Long time reader, first post. Just received my SIG SSG 3000 and purchased a barrel adapter. I was looking to purchase a barrel of approximately 26" and have it chambered in 280 AI. Was trying to find a smith to accomplish this task. First off, I keep reading that the 280 AI is a little finicky to chamber. Second, I need to find someone willing to headspace the new barrel to the bolt and adapter. Was told that it is pretty easy for any competent gunsmith, but was wanting someone who has done this in the states before or a very good rep.

Thanks for any and all help.

Since the SIG 3000's are only offered in .308 Win caliber how are you going to fit a long action cartridge like the .280 in that short action .308 length magazine?

Got my barrel back, looks great. Had the MTU barrel turned down to original barrel specs to fit the stock. Took longer than expected, but worth the wait. Just need to order a few bullets to work up loads and find some good glass.

I know this post is old but in case anyone else was wondering you have a shit load of oal in that ssg mag. I think its around 3.5"? So 280ai or most long action std bolt face calibers are possible.

Captramrod01, I believe you are correct on the 6.5x55. I'm hoping to find a oem heavy barrel 30-06 in the country though.

TallShot, I don't have any dummy or live rounds (yet), but will take a few pics for you when I get home.

Sorry for the late pics, Here is a 7.62x51 (loaded) and 280 AI (empty). Last one showing the amount of space from the end of the 280 AI brass to the magazine. Plenty of room. :)

JBell, went with Gene Williams in Princeton, TX. He's local to me and came highly recommended.

Tooslow , the finished product looks good , I 'm going that route on my Sauer 200 also . Sauer uses the same magazine and standard receiver for all 308 bolt face cartridges so you will not have any problems hand-loading as far as oal is concerned . Please post some pictures of group sizes once you get finalized on loads !
