    Hello all,

I'm looking for some advice and ideas here. Here's the backstory. A friend and I had a Archery elk hunt in CO planned for mid September around Montrose. We had been planning it since we got back from our 2010 Archery hunt at Delores. Well, at the last minute he had to cancel. We normally pack up our gear and drive up from Oklahoma, find our unit and pack in a pretty nice camp with a nice outfitter tent and stove. Well, this was more of a task than i wanted to try and accomplish by myself alone. So, I didn't get to go hunting either.

Now, I still have 13 days of vacation i need to use starting on the 28th of this month (this Friday). I'd like to take a trip somewhere and do some hunting of some type. Now that I have my dates straight, a CO elk hunt might still be a possibility, but id only have 2 days to hunt in the 2nd season. I have acces to cheap airline tickets anywhere in the U.S., and i can also drive if it's more economical. It would have to be something/somewhere that sells over the counter licsence to non-res hunters. I don't care if it elk, deer, prairie dogs, or coyotes. I'd just like to take a trip and see some new ground and meet new people. Im not into the "spoon fed-hold my hand" high fence stuff. I don't even really care if i kill anything, id just like to get out of my home range for a week or so and "Hunt". I've got a new 7WSM I'm itching to try out. If anybody has any ideas or suggestions on something I might be able to do let me know. I have some free housing I could use in/around Denver if anything was to come up around that area, but I'm open to go anywhere is the US.

    Thanks,

Unless I'm wrong the second season is still goin on and the 3rd & 4th are yet to come.

4th rifle for deer/elk is a draw, but there were units w/ left over tags after the draw. Unit 62 out of Montrose is good. I've had good luck at Peance Creek south and west of Meeker 4th season as well. Good luck.

Edited. Been 3 yrs. since I hunted CO and it looks like bull tags are not otc in every unit. My bad. Still, the 2-3 seasons are there.

Wow, what the hell am I thinking. I must have gotten totally mixed up on my dates, as i looked at the same page as the link you posted. Guess I'm thinking this is already November 24th instead of October 24th. Well, now that opens back up the possibility of Elk in CO, but that'd only give me 2 days to hunt in the 2nd season. I could fly up and rent a truck and just day hunt.

I know of a place that has free range aoudad and whitetail near Devils River in South TX. Let me know if you are interested and I'll get the details.

I'd love to take a free range Aoudad. When they are not in a high fence, they can be pretty elusive creatures. I've never harvested one. I'd love to hear the details.

Re: Need advice on a last minute hunting trip plz

Well thanks for the info, but that's not exactly what I had in mind. I'm not really wanting a Guide on a hunting ranch. "If" I was going to spend money like that, it'd be for a New Mexico bull elk.

So far, all I've come up with is permission to hunt 500 acres out in western Oklahoma for coyotes, or plan ride to CO to my aunts condo and drive/day hunt out of Evergreen.

Here's a question, if you buy elk tag (rifle) for the 2nd season and do not fill it, is it stop good for the 3rd season or do you have to spend another $550 for a new one?

Re: Need advice on a last minute hunting trip plz

If you are asking about colo on the tag question you have to buy another tag, and you are only allowed one bull tag(except in RARE circumstances). You can get up to two extra cow tags, in many parts of the state.

I hear what you are saying. I'm going to start applying for the draw up in NM and will probably do so through a guide service.
