I have a Barrett MRAD in .338 Lapua that I need to equipt. I looked at the Barrett rifles website and they recommend the Atlas 4.5”-9” bipod and that’s what I plan to get. Unfortunately Barrett does not recommend a rear monopod to go with that bipod. It seems like the MRAD is equipped with a butt stock downward facing picatiny rail. Does anyone who has set up one of these rifles know what size monopod I need. Or better yet a particular brand and model number that would work well with the Atlas/Barrett MRAD.

I also need a scope and rings. I am considering the S&B 5-25X56 and the March 5-40X56. I had hoped to wait for Ilya new review to come out and hear what he had to say. But that thread hinted that it should be out near the end of last year and I am too impatient to wait much longer. Any dealer who would like to give me a discount to buy three of either scope should send me a PM. But, I am mostly interested in shooters real experience with scopes on this or similar rifles.

Once I select a Scope I also need rings and bases. I am looking at the SPUHR but do not want to place an order until I firmly decide which scope. Is there any other Solid base and rings I should consider?

I would likely go with the shorter of the monopods as you can always add a bag under it to make it higher but if its to high you cant realyl make it shorter.

As for scopes I personally have had bad experince with S&B seen a few of the 1.1-8 short dots fail under realitively light loads (M14 ebrs). S&B was great about warranty but I would expect more durability out of a scope in that price line. There are some other great options out there though the new Nightforce 5-25x56 beast should be out in a month or two. US Optics is another one I am looking at seriously.

B3dlam (cool board name) Thanks, those are good thoughts. The one recommended by the prior poster looks like the second shortest, and the shortest one looks like space might get a little tight for my hand.

I understand how disconcerting it is to have a scope fail, I will look at the US Optics. It is just that I have never even seen one in real life. (I don't go to the range much. I shoot mostly on my own farm or on hunting trips) So once I get to that price range it takes a little to get over that unfamiliarity hump. I did but my first Night Force last year because of how highly most here on the hide speak of it. The optics seem good, but the illumination control is so crude that I was disappointed. (Could I have some cheese with my whine please) All that said I will try to take a hard look at the US Optic.

About the rings: SPUHR or Barrett Zero Gap? Or is there something else I should throw into the mix before I decide?

If I go with the Schmidt & Bender 5-25X56 how high do the rings need to be?

My Barrett MRAD has a mid length Atlas monopod and topped with the March FX 5X40 56mm non illuminated scope in Barrett ultrahigh rings. Went with LaRue QD Harris bipod and love it. Have shot 0.5 MOA to 850 yds. 0.32 MOA at 100 yds. Still learning. Hope to get it out to 1 mile by summer's end! Love the March and $3200 price tag from Kelby and quick availability sure beat out the other premiums scopes. Mirage at 40X, but good for spotting and reading wind. Back down to 30X for shooting. Good Luck

Sib1948 Thanks for the good info. I have two guestions about the March 5-40X56. First how fussy is the eye box? How carefully do you have to position your eye to get a full field of view? And second how useable is the retical at 5x? I am worried that it might get so fine that I would have trouble finding it against some backgrounds?

How much clearance do the Barrett ultra high rings give between the objective and the rifle? Could you have gone with the medium highs?

Check out Aadland mounts if Spuhr doesn't have what you need.

Joe, thanks for the recommendation, the Aadlands look like a real good mount.

Have you chosen your scope? If yes, what did you go with? If no look at the new Bushnell everyone is raving about XRS 4.5-30x50. I myself went with an LRA Bipod.....Monsters next to anything out there and though its $400+ if you're willing to spend $400 on rings for your scope I'd think you'd spend that much for a bipod for your MRAD. If you haven't got your scope yet and would consider the Bushy I might have one for you. Chris
