Need advice on getting a new rifle

I am looking to get a new rifle for target/sniper/hunting. I know I am asking quite a bit from one rifle. I have been looking at a .308 particularly the Savage 19058 Which is the 20 inch 5r heavy flutted threaded with 11.25 twist. I want to get advice on if that will be an accurate rifle and a good caliber.

Part of the problem was that I was dead set on the .308 but I hear that 6.5mm and 7mm as well as the 30-06 have flatter trajectory and better range. I like the fact that you can shoot both .308 and 7.62 which makes finding ammo easier but is that a good enough reason. Is the .308 accurate enough for fine long distance target/sniper scenarios?
