Need advices for building a bolt action rem 700 !

Hello ! I am so happy to join your community, until now I have not been able to do anything but lurk and look at everything with envy !


I am not a big gun afficionado, actually, I started getting interested in guns only 6 months ago !

And now I am the proud owner of an ages old 22lr that no longer have a name, so old he is ! Ahahah, and a sig p226 in 9mm !


I've been very happy with my purchases, but lately, I've been shooting some friends rifle and it got me into wanting one ! One is a hunting rifle in .300, and the other was a FN FAL, it's great fun !


It got me really excited about getting one so I looked and looked and looked again. Sometimes thinking of getting a battle rifle. Sometimes thinking of getting a .300. A .308. A semi-automatic. A bolt-action. And then here's what I decided !


I decided to get a Remington 700 bolt action, built starting from nothing but the best parts that I would assemble myself, and use the AICS stock because the look is very very sexy, and I heard it was a fantastic stock, too ! Absorbed recoil well, reliable, sturdy, everything !


Ah, and sorry for the introduction part, but I did not find a place where I could properly introduce myself !


So, I would like to have your advices on what parts to get, or check out !

I'd say for the rifle, I'd be ready to put 2000$ in it. I'm a bit scared of the price not because I'm not ready to pay for it, I'm the kind of guy to search the best quality possible outright that way I never have any problem, but if I pay 3500 for the rifle itself, well, I should have bought an actual Accuracy International rifle now, shouldn't I have ? Ahahah


Of course the optics are not in the 2000$ spectrum. It's only for the rifle.


Ah, and why the rifle ! Well I would like to shoot at 1000 yard, actually ! It's pretty impressive to shoot so far, it got me pretty excited !


Of course I won't shoot so far at the beginning. I'll start at 200 yards, and gradually increase the distance. And I bet I'll have to learn about this whole temperature and altitude thing I keep on hearing about to be able to shoot at 1000 yard.


It seems like a lot of fun times are ahead ! Ahahah !


But for now, rifle building ! I think I'll buy everything in June, after I have learned and checked things enough to be sure of what I want, and put together the money for it, ahahah !



Well I'm ready to take any advice ! I'm going to drown myself in all the FAQs available on this website ! I really appreciate them, by the way !



I feel a bit bad about not being able to contribute a whole lot to the community. I'm a newcomer to all this. But maybe in a few months, when I have the rifle and learned to shoot with it, I'll be able to give advices to beginners like me \o/

Ah, addendum ! I originally wanted a .300 but well, a lot of people told me that I should get .308 as a first rifle, more training, less harsh recoil, I'm still wondering now if I should go for the .300 !

People telling me that as a beginner, my shooting sessions should, even WILL whether I like it or not, be of 40 rounds max and that's that, before my shoulder is so sore I can't shoot anymore. Of course, this scared me a bit. This doesn't sound like a beginner's rifle, heh ?

The R700 will work great for you. An SPS model can be had for about $525 and you can drop it right in an AICS 1.5 for $850. It will shoot 1/2 MOA in that chassis with handloads. Good luck with your project and have fun.

Ah yes, the SPS ! I heard of it ! But see, isn't there only the mechanical parts for sale ? I would like to be able to purchase the action, the trigger, the barrel, this kind of thing, assemble it and then put it into the stock !

I constantly hear people going on and on about having to change the trigger and the stock because it's so bad, or change the barrel because the original barrel has a spin that is too slow for heavier bullets, so I'd like to avoid paying for stuff I'm going to replace anyway, ahahah

After reading your OP, here's my most sincere advice....slow the phuck down dude.

Buy a good used run of the mill 700 in .308 with some decent glass on top and shoot the ever living shit out of it for the next year or so. Burn a ton of ammo and learn how to shoot the thing....start close in and work your way out.

THEN take that rifle, or any other rifle for that matter, and use the action to build your long range weapon......

Yes, I'm an enthusiastic person. S'why I don't buy anything right now and am waiting for June. I have the money, but I'm very easily excited about stuff I like.

Well to be honest, it should'nt cost too much now, would it ? And I live in Fran;ce, a 500 dollar rifle here cost 900 euros, which makes for 1200 USD. Yeah, twice the goddamn price and more, crazy uh ? S'why I'm ready to go the distance and buy the best right off the bat in parts and assemble it myself. It will cost way less, for way better quality.

So yes, in the US, perhaps doing what you said would be the best thing to do. Not where I am, however. Unfortunately.

This reminds me of the guy that has never owner a boat, goes bass fishing with a buddy and luvs it. So, he buy's a $50,000 bass boat with all the latest electronics and some $500 rod/reel combinations and now he's ready for the B.A.S.S. tournament trail.

Guy, decide what you want as your 1000 yard rifle. Then figure out if you need a short action or a long action to build it. Once you have that info, just buy you a Varmint or Tactical rifle (something with a heavy barrel) in an over the counter caliber that can be used to build it, but won't be scared to pull the trigger because you think it's going to rip you're should off. Shoot that rifle just like I came out of the box until you burn the barrel out. Maybe by then you might be able to hit something at 1000 yds. Then you can have you're action with the burned out barrel blueprinted, a custom barrel installed, and a good stock and trigger installed.

WTF?

If you have the money to start with top end equipment, do it. Why handicap yourself right out of the gate. Buy once cry once. Get the best you can afford, always. Get what's in your budget and go shooting. As long as your getting trigger time in that's the important thing. Most of us start with something over the counter because we have to, and as money allows we upgrade. It's better to be shooting a 1 MOA rifle for 5 years than to save for 5 years to buy a sub MOA rifle. If you can start with a sub MOA rifle, why wait.

Also, you don't have to burn up a barrel to hit a target at 1k. With a solid 100 yard/meter zero, any ballistic calculator given the correct information will get you with in 1.5 MOA either way (and likely a lot closer than that). The wind is the determining factor with distance shots and the ballistics calculators are pretty close there too. Just start with good fundamentals (I'd recommend signing up for the lessons offered here) and get in lots of dry firing practice (which also doesn't burn barrels) and go out and do it. Have fun.

The above assumes you want to target practice and does not pertain to hunting. For hunting, get closer.

I am indeed an excitable person, this is why I'm waiting until June to buy it.


But, gentlemen, what you don't seem to understand is that for a tricked out Rem 700 in parts, I'll hardly pay for 300$, 400$ more, than the plain Rem 700 where I live.

I meant it when I said that everything was overpriced. A Ruger Mk II/III cost about 1000 dollar here.


Seeing this, well, why not fork over 300 dollar more than I would have to get the rifle in parts, and keep it that way virtually forever ?

And I do not intend to shoot 1000 yard right away. I'm in no way capable of that. It'll take months of shooting. Perhaps a year.


I understand that buying a 2000 rifle outright for a first rifle is ridiculous, but I would pay 1200 dollar for a plain rifle anyway ! So might as well get the best right out of the bat and fork over the dollars.


Still, thank you for your advices. If I was in the US, these would have been what I needed. But seeing the prices here, sadly, they're not. I really wish I would have the liberty to just buy two rifles for 800 dollar and shoot them out see which caliber I prefer, with relatively cheap ammo, but I can't, sadly.


Well, that's life.

Why not just pick up a Remington Sendero in 300wm and shoot it alot. The more you shoot the more you learn and the more you know the easier it is to get the right parts that work for you.

It cost way too much in France. I did not find anything online but I did see a thread talking about buying it for 2100 euros.

Seems like the Sendero is not shipped to France anymore.


Also the price, again. A tricked out rem 700 in parts will cost way, way less than a stupidly simple Rem 700. Okay so not way less, but it will cost only about 400 dollars more, probably less.


Again, this is why I want to buy the best part and build it myself. Everything is overpriced here.

No, I have no idea of what it takes. And to be honest, it matters little, as my father know a gunsmith.

I figured that I'd learn on the spot, borrow stuff from him or ask him for advices when I have problems, and if all fails, give it to him.

I do not intend to shoot 1000 yard right off the bat ! I intend to start at 200, master this distance, then work my way up ! I intend to learn about elevation, temperature, and windage, and did not asked for help for that. There's enough FAQs and how-to as it is on the internet !

And I have the money, I do not want some kind of ridiculous TACTICAL OPERATING OPERATOR TACTICALLY SNIPING SNIPER IN AN OPERATION rifle for 400$, ahahah.

What do you want me to do with a 5000 rifle ? It's for warfare and law enforcement ! I don't need such a good rifle. Great or good rifle is good enough.

If I was going to take a shot to save people's life, or if I was in a warzone of course I'd want the best, but here it's not the case.

First off, do you think there is a reason everyone is telling you to get a factory Rem 700?

Can you even get a Stiller, Surgeon, etc... action exported to France? Here is Stiller's comments on exporting anything gun-related:

For $2000, you can't build a custom rifle unless you seriously find some deals.

Stiller TAC30 $850
AICS 1.5 $850
Barrel of choice $300
Trigger of choice $250

= $2250

Add in gunsmithing fees, scope base and rings and you are looking at $3000 without taxes.

Also, if you are ordering in June, in the US you might have a rifle to shoot by the end of next year if you build a custom one. With a factory 700, I would bet money you are the weak link especially if you drop it in an AICS stock. If you start to out shoot the rifle, either sell the rifle which shouldn't be hard with the inflation you claim and buy a custom action and barrel or have the 700 action blueprinted and put a better barrel on it.

Also, I know plenty of "gunsmiths." Just because someone claims they are a gunsmith doesn't mean I would trust them to competently install a barrel on a $3000+ rifle. Look around here. If someone doesn't buy a factory rifle, they send their stuff to only a select few gunsmiths in the country.

Under the Bolt rifles section, about the 7th thread down is a thread that will help you with answers to many of your questions. If you read through it before posting more, you might not get so much flak. Some fellows are especially "sensitive" about answering the same questions repeatedly. In fact, there are three cartoons going around that jab at many of the questions that are repeatedly asked before people study.

Things like "I want to shoot 1000 yards. What rifle should I get?" , are asked in the cartoon segments. You might want to look for them.

Perhaps I could even buy only a barrel and the AICS stock, shoot it like hell, never touch the original stock/barrel, and then sell it "like new". Hmm.

That makes sense. Indeed, indeed. I could get the rifle when I want to have it, I could sell it for almost the price I paid for it (Of course I'll mention I did use the mechanical part of the rifle, I'm not a crook), yes, yes.

And yes, "gunsmiths". I heard of a few horror stories with people who own armories and think that makes them gunsmith.

No fear though, that guy, that do have an armory, has been building up rifles for years, he made one for my father. Even made an entirely suppressed bird shotgun which is pretty cool.

I didn't find such a thread. Is it the FAQs ? I understand that a lot of this kind of questions must be asked, this makes me uneasy. I feel like I'm bothering people and I probably am. For that, I am sorry.

But well, for the 1000 yards part, it's just a number. I just wanted the rifle to be able to shoot that far so that one day, when I'll finally be able to do so, I would not be held back by the rifle. But yes, it's a whim.

And well, a "1000 yard rifle", even a .223 can go that far, you just need heavier bullets. I think wolf make 75 grain ?

Why not give George at GA Precision a call. Tell him you want an 18" barreled AR10. That will handle all of the above and then some for 2400 dollars or so.

Just think all the money you save on a factory rifle you can spend on etiquette and shooting classes. I'm sure there's a class that covers both of those at one time in "France".

Ya know I was in the same place as you were a couple weeks ago. I literally just purchased an sps chambered in .308. I immediatly wanted to start changing the barrel and stock and stuff. Then, it came to me. I have not even shot this gun yet. So I decided to slow way down, and just shoot the crap out of this gun and just have fun. Then maybe after a year maybe of practicing I will buy the components to build a long range rifle. For now, I am totally happy in my place, and that is a dude who has no idea what he is doing and is literally learning after every shot, or miss if you will. My advice is to buy a model 700 and go out and have fun. Like I have, and yes you can buy the parts and assemble them yourself, but I am willing to bet alot of money that if you build this rifle yourself, it will not turn out well. Do not ask me why I feel this way cause I am not going to write over 5000 words explaining why only a skilled gun smith can perform this work. If you have a friend that is a gun smith, do not borrow tools and do it yourself. Just give the gun to him and watch if anything. Besides coming from a man who is a mechanic, I am certain that even if the gunsmith is your freaken lover, he will never allow anyone to borrow his tools.

Indeed, French is a subrace of Caucasian. Of course what with the history of europe where everyone invaded everyone, we had a lot of mixing, but we're still different people. We can spot who is Italian/German/Silly Englishman/Spanish easily enough.

And no matter. If I do not let a Swiss, an Italian, or a German in, say, my bar, because they're Swiss/German/Italian, it can be called racism. It's against their nationality, not the color of their skin, but still.

I guess we use it for the lack of another word ?

Thank you ! And yes, the prices suck and don't think it's just France. I guess there's not a gun culture that is as big as in the US, because of that the armorers need to capitalize on every sale. Still, it's theft.
