Hi all. Been a lurker for some time now and have read quite a few valuable posts but really can't seem to make up my mind on a new scope purchase. I'm hoping maybe someone out there, with a similiar situation, could help.

I currently have a Savage 10FP in .308 topped with a Super Sniper 10x42 scope. I use this for both deer hunting and general hobby target shooting out to 200 yards. I'd love to shoot further distances and more often, but really don't have the time at the moment. Nonetheless, the SS works great for target shooting in broad daylight, however, when hunting, the fixed power is limiting and the clarity at low light levels (dusk) kinda suck in my opinion. To be fair though, this is my first and only scope, so I really don't have much to compare to except that I can't see much at 100 yards or so when the light diminishes.

Therefore, I'm looking for a new scope. I'd like something with variable power and better light transmission and clarity, especially at low light levels. I've looked at the Mark 4 3.5-10x 40mm M1 FFP, as I've heard good things about Leupold glass regarding clarity and light transmission, but I don't necessarily want to drop $1500 on a scope. I can if I know it will work, but not knowing how the glass truely compares to the SS has me a bit hesitant.

I'd like a variable power starting around 3x or so and going up to 10x...12 or 15 is also acceptable, 30mm tube, mil-dot, enough adjustment to shoot out to at least 500 yards, and crisp, clear optics, especially at low light...better than the Super Sniper. Any suggestions?

Please bear with me, I'm a huge noob when it comes to scopes.

Will do, thanks. How is the optic clarity compared to the SS or Leupold?

If you want to keep it under 1k the PST and Weaver Tactical models referenced previously are about it if you want a variable power. Sightron S3 isn't out yet I don't think, but once it hits it will probably be another good choice (S3 glass is very good for mid-ranged price stuff).

You could also get a variable leupold used, but the ones at that price range are all mixed knobs.

The Nightforce is a bit more than I want to spend at this time, but thanks for the suggestion.

How's the glass on the Weaver Tactical and PST? I want to make sure that if I'm going to spend money on a new scope, I'm getting something better than the SS I currently have. Any ideas?

I have the new weaver tactical and so does ggarrett1911. The glass on it is excellent. Its bright, displays neutral colors and is sharp at all levels. What drew me to it over the PST despite the wait is how good the glass is. I PM'd a few here that have the PST and one of last years weaver tacticals, each one said the same thing. At lower powers they are close, weaver edges it out. At higher powers, longer distances and especially low light the weaver is superior.

Don't get me wrong, the PST would be a good scope to have and I don't think you could go wrong with either. The sub $1K market is really starting to get quite competitive especially for those of us that can't afford PM, S&B ect. Ggarrett1911 posted some pictures through the scope today, I was hoping to do that today as well but didn't get my camera back.

The other thing to consider is the PST is good 200-250 dollars more depending on the model than the weaver…. On the other hand Vortex has a better warranty, but I think that’s only going to be a problem if you plan on selling the scope and upgrading in the future.
