Hi all. Been a lurker for some time now and have read quite a few valuable posts but really can't seem to make up my mind on a new scope purchase. I'm hoping maybe someone out there, with a similiar situation, could help.
I currently have a Savage 10FP in .308 topped with a Super Sniper 10x42 scope. I use this for both deer hunting and general hobby target shooting out to 200 yards. I'd love to shoot further distances and more often, but really don't have the time at the moment. Nonetheless, the SS works great for target shooting in broad daylight, however, when hunting, the fixed power is limiting and the clarity at low light levels (dusk) kinda suck in my opinion. To be fair though, this is my first and only scope, so I really don't have much to compare to except that I can't see much at 100 yards or so when the light diminishes.
Therefore, I'm looking for a new scope. I'd like something with variable power and better light transmission and clarity, especially at low light levels. I've looked at the Mark 4 3.5-10x 40mm M1 FFP, as I've heard good things about Leupold glass regarding clarity and light transmission, but I don't necessarily want to drop $1500 on a scope. I can if I know it will work, but not knowing how the glass truely compares to the SS has me a bit hesitant.
I'd like a variable power starting around 3x or so and going up to 10x...12 or 15 is also acceptable, 30mm tube, mil-dot, enough adjustment to shoot out to at least 500 yards, and crisp, clear optics, especially at low light...better than the Super Sniper. Any suggestions?
Please bear with me, I'm a huge noob when it comes to scopes.
