Ok, I lied. I'm not exactly new to shooting, but I am new to competitive shooting. I very familiar with service rifle competition and I'm a former Marine. However, I want to get into the long range F-Class F/TR matches.

I'm considering having a rifle built for F/TR matches but i want to also be able to shoot 1000 yard Palma matches.

I'm having a REM700 .270 action machined (for lack of jargon knowledge) to a .308. This action will be installed into a McMillan A4 stock with a 30" Kreiger 5R barrel with 1:10 twist. I'm planning to keep the stock trigger but have it modified to 2 1/2 #'s. I've already found a gunsmith to do this build for me but I was just wondering how misguided I am at this point.

I plan to shoot 175/180/185 smk's for the F/TR matches and this will be the type matches that I am mostly interested in. I realize that 155gr is the ammo used in Palma but at this point I don't care to be "competitive" in those matches. I'm just wanting to learn Palma and get experience before having a real Palma rifle built. I'm only explaining this part because I want you all to know that I realize that the 1:10 twist will be a bit much for the 155gr ammo used in Palma matches.

I would certainly appreciate any advice/comments/suggestions/criticism that anyone may have. TIA

Re: Need help/advice/suggestions....New to shooting...

Your build will do fine, the only place you need to use 155 gr .308 Bullets in Palma is international Palma matches. The USA Palma Matches let you use any weight .308 caliber bullet you can make work in a .308 Win. case.

If you can, get as much 1000 yard shooting in as possible. 2/3 of the F Class Nationals are shot at 1000 yds only 1/3 at 600 yds.

Good Luck

I've seen a couple of people here at my local range that didn't understand that Palma bullet limitation.

That rig will do you fine in F-TR. Palma on the other hand is a world of bondage with Buck Rogers guns with 32" barrels and "iron" sights with optical inserts.

Stuff like this:

When my local range does Full Bore Palma matches the let us shoot in F-class, we just get scored separately.

I'm new to short range F-TR and I would recommend 1 1/2 pounds or less trigger pull for a competition gun. Of course if your're not comfortable starting with that you could always have the trigger lightened as needed.
