Not sure this is the right forum, so if it is not, feel free to move this thread.

Basically, my fiance and I are going to be moving to a new location because she will be in private practice starting middle of next year. She's asked me about areas in the US that I would want to move to and have pretty much told her Montana, Wyoming, South Dakota, Utah, Oregon, Arizona.

The main reasons for this were A. I'm a German mountaineer, and the flat lands of Florida just aren't doing it for me. B. I want to shoot without having to travel 1+ hours, one way, to a rifle range.

Here is where I am venturing into uncharted territory; how does this work in regards to shooting? I see countless pictures from members here showing them shooting in an open desert or open range area where you can see for miles around. Can you simply find a place like this, away from roads, set something up with a backstop and start to shoot? Or how does this work? I have also seen people post pics/stories of how they go out and shoot prairie dogs, coyotes, moles, etc and it seems once again, that they are in the middle of nowhere. This would be a DREAM for me.

The areas we have been looking at are very rural and open areas. No metros; some of these towns have populations of less than 15k people.

I guess my main question that I can't answer is, can I simply find a 'safe' area to shoot in in most states, or how does one go about this in sparsely populated areas?

    Thanks

Oregon wouldn't be on the top of the list. Eastern Oregon is nice, spend a lot of time around Lakeview and there is lots of open area to shoot to 1k+ till your heart is content. I would look more around Montana, Wyoming & Utah.

I can deal with the snow in eastern Oregon but it rains so much and cant do shit in the rain. Snow, its great for hunting coyotes in. Game population isn't what it used to be here (what is though).

    Just my opinion

In western South Dakota there's a good amount of NFS, BLM and Grassland that you can shoot on. In the Black Hills we don't have the severe weather of the prarie. Plus, no state income tax.
