I want to get a .22 with a bull barrel. I've read as much as I can on this site and am just thoroughly confused due to all of the contrary reports and opinions. I have a $300 budget and want to get a new .22 with at least a 21" bull barrel. What is the best option that I have? There is a Savage MKII FVXP at Dick's Sporting Goods for $229. Anyone have any thoughts on this particular rifle? TIA

Oh yeah, the main purposes for this rifle would be mostly for use as a trainer. I want use it to practice wind adjustments, trigger and breathing control, etc... at 100 yards and further. I could also use it for entry into competition shooting (just as a beginner rifle).

Re: Need help selecting a .22.......

The Savage rimfires are good rifles

Suggest a Murphy Precision 20moa base

The Bushnell 10x mil/mil scope is not super expensive and will be a good trainer

Stick with the sub-sonic match ammo; find which brand your rifle likes

Re: Need help selecting a .22.......

If I was shopping in your price range I would look into the Savage MKII FV-SR. The barrel is a little shorter than what you are looking for, but there really isn't much of a reason for a longer barrel on a .22 lr.

Plus the rifle is suppressor ready if you ever decide to go that route.

Re: Need help selecting a .22.......

Skip the package - you'll be wanting to replace the scope really quick. Also, the F stock flexes a lot up front.

I'd look at the BV or BTV ... or get a FV and then a replacement stock from boyds (they are the oem for savage anyway)

Thanks again!

Im gonna get the FVSR and replace the stock with a Boyd's Tacticool (I think), or maybe something else. I've got a scope that I can use to begin with. It's a Tasco World Class Plus 3-9X44 with Taiwan glass. I've had it on a .270 (that is currently under transformation and receiving a McMillan A4 stock, 30" Palma contour Kreiger 5R barrel, and rechambering to .308, plus a few more things) for the past 15 years and it's still in near pristine condition so I'm sure it will serve well for this rifle for a little while longer.

Re: Need help selecting a .22.......

the only problem with a savage is the lack of a recoil lug....there's no way to really bed it....and they're hit/miss in the quality department.

if you can do it, put money towards a CZ 455 or a 452.....it's a MUCH better action design and very easy to mod to a great trigger.

now, it won't necessarily be more accurate, out of the box, but if you plan to ever actually work on it..it will pay off big time.

this is coming from a guy with 3 savages...
