Rifle Scopes Need help which format, moa or mil?

I've been reading all of the threads on this topic but still am troubled on which format scope to buy for my .338.

I mainly shoot NRA LR, which is prone shooting in coat and sling. I've been doing that for 20 years, but have tried the tactical matches and love it. Because of this kind of shooting, my brain is trained in moa, not mils.

I'm trying to replace glass on my .338 and can't decide. I'd really like to hear some opinions from those that have tried both? If you use moa's, how do you hold on a target when there is both an elevation as well as a windage correction? Do you click or hold off?

Is there an moa reticle that has a field of points on it like the Horus reticles?

Me personally from making adjustments for years in moa, switching to mils simplified things. Everyone has different tastes though. The best thing you can do is just try each out. I prefer working with the decimals in mils over the fractions of moa. Tactical scope availability with matching mil/mil reticles and turrets is a lot better than in moa/moa, but that doesn't necessarily mean one is better than the other.

I'll say this too... Being used to adjustments in moa on KD courses doesn't necessarily mean you're stuck on moa and can't switch. It's easy to do if you want to.

I'm relatively new to long range, compared to some of the guys here, but I do believe that going with one over the other is a matter of preference. You have to choose which is better for you.

Many that I talk too prefer mils because they find is easier to just think in 1/10ths. I think in inches, although I have to admit that I've been considering getting a Mil scope to see how it works out for me in the field.

Of course, this is just an opinion, but I also think that MOA is an advantage in precision shooting because the adjustments are more finer. For example, on my Nightforce, one click on the turret is equal to .25 MOA. On a Mil scope, one click is equal to .36 MOA.

As far as dialing/versus holding goes, I usually dial my dope to adjust for range changes, but hold to account for wind variables.

I felt that MOA was much easier to learn and make quick adjustments(for me). Only downfall I found was you where limited to .25,.50,.75 of adjustments...if you found that you needed to dial 6.65, you have to adjust manually or hold over/under for additional .15 over .50 or under .10 from the .75.

Oh yeah and I always hold for wind, dial for elev.....where I'm from, wind changes minute to minute

I speak all 3 languages fluently MILS, MOA & IPHY. If the optic tracks true any system will work just fine, math is math and 99% of the ballistic programs will spit it out any way you want it.

For ease of use I personally prefer IPHY. The multiplier is 100 or "add 2 zero's" when doing UKD because everything in my world is measured in feet and inches. The multiplier for MOA is 95.5 and Mils is 27.778.

If your not military or LEO there is no reason you would HAVE to learn a new formula. Military & LEO may have compatibility issues with other services/branches/nations. The MIL system does lend itself rather nicely to meters which is in use in quite a bit of the world.

FWIW I dial elevation and hold wind unless there is a predominant wind which I can dial in and adjust for w/ holds.

Most guys run milrad seems these days.

Not to sidetrack, but a .338 for shooting matches?
