I have a savage 10 fcp hs precision chambered in .308 with a nightforce 8-32 with a 20moa riser. I am currently shooting 168 gr sierra matchking BTHP with 42.5gr of IMR4064. Shoots great out to 750 yards but would like to shoot out to 1000. Now I am thinking about rebarreling with a shilen savage replacement select barrel chambered in a 6.5/284 or .260. What size barrel should fit in my stock? what barrel length and twist? Is the replacement barrels as good as having a gun smith cut the chamber and thread? Should this be alot more accurate than my .308 barrel? I am also going to replace the trigger and glass bed the hs stock. I just need some suggestions on what the best route would be.

I personally wouldn't change barrels til that one is shot out. unless you just want to change calibers. your barrel is fine to 1000. maybe bump your load up a bit. i use 45 gr of Varget and 175 SMK's, i believe the velocity was right around 2680 out of my 26" Rem 700 .308. if your HS stock has aluminum bedding, i'd just skim bed it, and maybe replace trigger with a Rifle Basix trigger. also might check with the guys at savageshooters. com and see what they think for more options.

Re: Need help with my savage 10 fcp hs precision

I have had 2 shilen select match savage barrels they are great barrels one was 260 8 twist and the other was 260ai 8 twist both shot 1/2moa and better sometimes. i would run medium varmint contour and 26" 8 twist. sharp shooters supply makes a fantastic replacement trigger for a savage for under $100. both of my shilens loved the 139 scenars and yes it kicked the shit out of my factory 308 in performance mostly due to 260vs308. just keep the factory barrel in case you ever deciede to sell the rifle you can just put it back on and have a factory rifle which is alot easier to sell.

Ok i probably should wait because bone stock it shoots consistly 1/2"to1/4" groups at 100. Last weekend I shot at 500 with a min group size of 1.5 inches and max of 3", i also shot at 750 after lining out the wind and getting the scope dialed in it shot 2 5 shot groups 3.75" and 3.95"

Re: Need help with my savage 10 fcp hs precision

Correct me if I'm wrong, but if your gun is printing under 4"@ 750yds., and you project that out to 1000yds., you should be looking at under 5-1/2" groups. That sounds pretty damn good to me for an out-of-the-box rifle! What was the wind like, and what ammo were you using?

Re: Need help with my savage 10 fcp hs precision

That's the beauty of the Savage. Buy and action wrench, barrel vise and barrel nut wrench (buy one extra barrel nut) and you can swap the barrels anytime you want to. The factory mounted barrel nut is usually a bugger to get off, my Dad had to use a pipe wrench on his (he had the new smooth nut), he replaced it with a standard slotted nut. If you go with the .260 or 7-08, you only need one set of headspace gages.
With the 7mm and 168 grain berger VLD, you can reach WAY out there.

I was shooting 168 gr seirra matchking with 42.5 gr of imr4064 loaded on lapua brass with cci primers. Wind was at 5mph from my 9 ocklock. I have pictures of my groups at 750. This weekend I will try 1000 with my 175 gr ammo.

you dont like the accutrigger? you can put different springs in the accutrigger if you want it lighter. there are a few good posts about bedding in the smithing section. like 3 or 4 of them i think. i just a select match for my 10hs. waiting to have it mounted now.

Re: Need help with my savage 10 fcp hs precision

I hate the blade on the trigger and the pull and I switched the springs. Found a trigger from shootersupply that will go from 4 oz to 3 lbs really crisp and smooth

If you want some of the best glass bedding material that I've ever used try scorehigh bedding compound very easy to work with. You can order it directly from them there on the net scorehigh gunsmithing in Albuquerque New Mexico. Also try some reloader 15 velocity and accuracy is way better for me.

Re: Need help with my savage 10 fcp hs precision

jray,
Have you tried any other bullets in the Savage?
My savage really won't shoot the 168 gr. bullets for crap, but as soon as I went to the 178 A-Maxes the print consistent .5" groups. I shoot the 178 over 43.5gr RL15, getting 2600 fps, and the round shoots great.
Try different bullets and loads before you give up on the barrel.
Oh and 1 more thing: Stop cleaning the gun so often, I can't get .5 groups until after 20 or so rnds.
Good luck

Re: Need help with my savage 10 fcp hs precision

i cant say for sure, but from what i read on shillen's site, all the calibers are the same contour as savages tactical/varmint small shank barrels. thats what i understood. i have the same rifle and im putting a select match shillen on mine. its going to shoot 168g unless i cant get it to group, then i might try 175s. shillen s7 contour is what mine is. thats what will fit yours withg no problems.

barrel length is gonna be set by the barrel maker usually. my 308 only comes in 24" unless you special order. i think they come in 26" or 28" blanks and then they cut them down, but you have to ask, it wont be whats made and available, you know what i mean? look on shillens site. same with the twist unless you want custom then expect a wait and a cost. dont bed anything til you get the new barrel and get a better recoil lug, the .250" ones. a good barrel from a good barrel maker is just as good as having a smith do it. my shillen was a no brainer when i found it at a good price. have fun and good luck. feel free to ask any questions

Decided not to change anything but the trigger and bed the stock I just shot the best 5 shot group i have ever shot, including my custom rifles, 5 shots in one hole. The hole measured .155 at 300

Re: Need help with my savage 10 fcp hs precision

yeah, that pesky trigger. better swap that out, then your group will shrink, lol you know i think you can change out the trigger spring and get down to 6oz

Re: Need help with my savage 10 fcp hs precision

its all good, but savage make a good target trigger adjustable down to 6oz and i believe its just a spring change away from what comes in the tacticals.
