So I was out for work delivering a piece of equipment about an hour from home today and had to wait on the customer so decided to stop by a really small gun store in the town to see if they had any powder because I don't have any for pistols. Lo and behold he had some, so I bought a 8lb of H titegroup and a pound of varget and a pound of retumbo since he had them and anything is hard to find right now. I over payed for all the powder because I can't find it anywhere and needed some so what I have done dumber things. Where I am now starting to get angry is I do not think they were all sealed containers and full. Something just felt off. They do seem to have been sitting on the shelf for a while but short of weighing all the powder is without the container how could I tell how much powder I actually have. Does anyone have the empty weight of a lb and 8lb powder container so I can figure out what I have.

Walter

I always take the cap off and see if it's sealed, but I've also had cans of powder where the seal came off by twisting the cap off.

Whether your stuff is legit and not missing anything, or whether it's been mixed, I can't say.

Chris

One for sure the seal was just sitting there and it looked like it has been off before, as it was not even sticky anymore. The other looks like it was peeled back some then stuck back on. Just want to check and make sure that there is enough weight there before I go calling the store.

This is your problem. You need to weigh it, if you think somebody would actually jeopardize his business by cheating you. What you bought is not suitable for pistol anyway. If I were you, I would stick to, and spend money on specific components that you actually need. And yes, sometimes those seals don't seal very well so it's not exactly like a jar where the lid pops up and tells you it has been tampered with. If the weight is good and it smells okay, I wouldn't worry about it. On the bright side, you have something that somebody else wants, so you should be able to recover a good part of your "investment". BB

How is titegroup not suitable for pistol? I would love find an 8lb jug.

Titegroup is a fine powder for .45, 9mm, .38 and .357. Many guys in IDPA use it successfully. In fact, a number of your shotgun powders cross over just fine for pistol shooting.

EDIT:
To the OP, I hope that you did not get burned for less than what you paid for, but unless it's a large difference, think of it as paying just a little more than you already conceded to paying for the powder and chalk it up to a lesson learned the hard way. Otherwise, you'll sweat it and raise your blood pressure for something that means little in the larger scheme of things.

I've had occasional situations whereupon I found out once I got home that a box of something was missing a portion of the contents. Yes, it did tick me off at the time and I'll admit that for a short time I felt like I imagine you feel. Then I let it go, since dwelling on it just makes the small hurt fester and blow up into something larger than it should be. Just my opinion.

Are you confusing titegroup with titewad???

Yeah. I'm wondering if the OP didn't grab a 4lb'r *thinking* it was an 8'r, and then subconsciously thought it felt awful light to be 8lbs.

...exactly what happened to me.

I will have to check to make sure it really is an 8lb, but by the picture it looks to be a 4lb. If so then I really overpaid. I guess I should have looked a little closer. I will go check that now...

Walter

yea those 8lb jugs of titegroup are HUGE. Ive gone through a few of them. I would like to buy the 25lb kegs, but I can get them without an 06 FFL.

Just checked it and it actually is and 8lb jug. But I don't have a scale to weigh it so I will have to get one.

Walter,

8 lbs of Titegroup will fill about 14 THOUSAND rounds of 9mm with 124 grainers. Even if you grossly overpaid, the cost increase per round will be small as the bullet is the most expensive component.

If you want to get rid of a few pounds of that overpriced stuff, I'll take it at your cost. Seriously, please PM if interested.

Be aware that many powder manufacturers use the same size container for differing powders to cut costs and just stick the appropriate label on it to match the specific powder in the bottle. Given that powders vary in both density and shape, the volumes they take up when stored in the same size container may be different.

As an example, I recently bought a pound of Alliant Power Pro 2000 MR to try out and thought the container was short given that it was not full and there was no seal present when I checked it. Store owner verified all other one lb. Power Pro 2000 MR containers were partially filled and even opened up a couple and confirmed they were also missing the seals.

Still not fully convinced, when I got home, I verified the weight and confirmed there indeed was one pound of powder in the bottle. Next time I will be more trusting! :)
