Need higher rings for M4 - recommendations please

So I have a fairly standard M4 with a folding tube stock. I currently have a 4-16x50 Vortex mounted on the flattop. However, I cannot get a good sight picture due to the rings being too low. Can I get some suggestions as to what height I need. This is not my primary rifle so I don't want to spend a ton of money but I do want something that will do the trick. Thanks in advance.

M4 generally likes higher rings.

For example, the US Navy / Marines use a medium ring for their Mk12, but it has a higher top rail. On the SAM-R, they use the same ring (ARMS #22) in the high mount on a standard A-3/4 flattop. What I have learned is that it has nothing to do with getting the scope lower, but it has to do more with the height of the cheek weld on the stock. Very different from a bolt gun.

1.50" is usually standard for a scope mount on an M4/16 and AR-15 platform.

I also use 1.5 " rings or mounts on my AR's. Burris Extreme Tactical rings work for me.

My M4 currently has a Vortex PST 1-4x24 in the Vortex cantilever mount, which is 1.59" from rail to optic center. Works pretty well for me. Used to have an ADM Recon 30mm, which is 1.47" and that was good also.

My AR10 has that ADM Recon now holding my NF SHV F1 but it is sitting on a Badger 22moa riser which adds 3/8" in height. Total height ends up about 1 13/16" (1.8+") and that actually works well for me also.

My MK12 uses NF A110 rings (1.375") and I am good with them but may add another Badger 22moa riser to that as they are a little low for me.

I've been happy with the Nikon M223XR mount I have on my AR15.

I also run Leupold PRW (high) on my AR10, but found they were a smidge low on their own and needed a rail riser. Not sure on brand or model, came on the gun when I bought it, but maybe about .25" height boost and scope sits perfectly.

The SWFA SALT Mount seems to be pretty comfortable to me. Very robust and not too expensive.
Warne has their Skel mount for a little more at a slightly lower height.

What the heck is a "folding tube stock"?? Scope height is dictated by the way you fit the stock and the position you shoot from most. Only you can figure out what ring height you need. 1 1/2 as mentioned above is pretty much a standard height but that doesn't mean it will fit you. Most of us would use a one piece mount instead of individual rings. Probably a cantilever mount for proper eye relief. I highly recommend buying rings/mounts from a local source if at all possible.

A "folding tube stock" is just that - a stock which is a tube which is adjustable in length.

Not wanting to spend $$ on new rings I did a little more research and discovered that Brownells sells risers which will allow me to raise the height of the rings by 3/4 of an inch. Problem may be solved.

Your stock is adjustable not folding. You can get chi-com rail risers from amazon for 10-15 bucks. 3/4" sounds like a ton to me.

My AR (a Stag Model 6 Super Varminter) uses Weaver See-Thru Rings mounted directly onto the flattop which provide a good sight axis height for me. My scope is a Weaver 6-24x40 V-24 Classic that I picked up as used from Amazon. My stock is a Luth AR MBA-1. The cheek rest is not raised, and the butt plate adjustment is used to switch between my 20 y/o (5', danged near nuthin') Granddaughter, and me (6' 5 1/2")
