I need a pack for this upcoming hunting season. I do a lot of hunting / ultra light camping. We usually hike in a day or two, set up camp and hunt a few days, and hike back out. Under tarp tents, light sleeping bags and pads, etc. My loaded out camping gear comes in just over 25lbs. Add my 300winmag, ammo, binocs, etc and i get up over 35lbs easy. I use osprey hiking packs with good success when not hunting, but i want something a little more sturdy.

Im stuck between a Kifaru Marauder or Tactical Tailor Modular Operator pack. Either bag would be supplemented with Molle gear to fit my personal needs. Im trying to avoid the Eberlestock bags only because this pack may be used just for hiking as well and I wouldnt need the rifle scabbard. Any advice?

i have the Navigator and love it. Mike's points are correct, it's absurdly versatile. I've written a review of my navigator here somewhere if you want to read more.

The Navigator is the tactical equivalent of the Kifaru Siwash which is their hunting/hiking line.

I just bought an Eberlestock Halftrack for traveling in Afghanistan on 3-7 day trips for work. It's a good option verses my current large issue pack, it's a front open clam style making for efficient packing, so I suggest maybe looking into it. There is no wasted space or rifle pocket. They have quite a few color options too.

Also London Bridge Trading has a couple good offerings with their LBT-2595A 3 day pack and bigger brother LBT-2595B 5 day pack.

Options options options....................

Re: Need Pack Advise: Kifaru vs ?

keep in mind that for some eberlestock models you can detach/remove the rifle-scabbard. the phantom can do that, as an example. or check out the terminator.

Re: Need Pack Advise: Kifaru vs ?

Eberlestock's are nice packs but choosing one would sort of defeat the purpose of the "ultralight" part of "ultralight camping." They're designed for war and there's a reason tanks weigh more than pickups.

The new LoDrag by Eberlestock is made of a lighter material and the scabbard will tuck away. Contact Ceylonc here on the hide and he can answer any Eberlestock questions.

The marauder is a great pack as well but unless you want to strap the rifle on or get a gun bearer there is no scabbard

Re: Need Pack Advise: Kifaru vs ?

i cant find on the Eberlestock website which packs have removable scabbards. Does anybody have an Eberlestock pack that can take a picture of how the scabbards tuck away or remove? It would be nice to have the option to use the scabbard or leave it behind.

There are a few different packs in the Eberlestock lineup that would certainly be worth considering for your needs/applications. Nothing against Kifaru & some other companies suggested here (they build very nice gear) but Eberlestock has some new packs that are tremendously well made & designed that don't weigh a ton. Specifically, I'd give strong consideration to the Eberlestock V69 Destroyer, X3 Lodrag, X4 HiSpeed, G3 Phantom, F3 Halftrack or F3F FAC Trac. Which one is specifically the best is going to vary on your wants, needs & applications. Feel free to give me a call at (901)334-6808 anytime & we'll narrow down your options. From there, then you can decide whether Eberlestock makes your "perfect" pack or if you should go another route.

I don't think you will find a better quality or more comfortable pack then the Kifaru. I own several and have used their products for years and highly recommend them. They are also made in the US with great customer service.

Re: Need Pack Advise: Kifaru vs ?

Kifaru packs are made to order since there are options, so 6 weeks may be the current run time. With that said, they do occasionally have things on hand and it is also possible for a shorter wait time. If you are leaning that way, give them a call. I have yet to meet anyone that is disappointed with their packs so I believe the wait will be worth it. I have used several of their variants on multiple worldwide deployments and they are my "go to" pack. If you can't wait the 6 weeks for the pack, I would also encourage you to check out Triple Aught Design's (TAD) FAST Pack EDC. I really like this pack and in particular, I like the "Transporter Tail" which allows you to carry a weapon or other long items such as skis, poles etc on the pack. It is pretty trick and there was a lot of thought put into this pack. They also make a smaller version called the FAST Pack Lightspeed. Oh, and they are made in the good ol' US of A!

Re: Need Pack Advise: Kifaru vs ?

I've had my eye on the Tad Gear fast pack for years now. I really liked their patrol version but they aren't making it anymore. The EDC does have some nice features though. And I don't think they are still made in the USA. But shit, either was the hat and t shirt that the NRA sent me this year. Made in china!

Re: Need Pack Advise: Kifaru vs ?

According to their site today, both of the FAST packs are made in the US. I believe that most of their clothing is as well but some is not. All of the pants, shorts, and shirts that I have gotten from them were made in the US but a sweater I received was not. If you check under "Specs", it will say either made in the US or imported. Also, if you are Mil/LE, they do offer a discount on products to include their packs but you need to call.
