Guy's,
My wife and I live in a Townhouse with neighbors in all directions. We have a little patio area and like to feed the cute little birds. But we have a handfull of these dirty Pigeons. I have an RWS .177 cal rifle, and if I discharged that, I'd have the SWAT team here! I got a blow gun, but I don't have all day to wait around for the little bastards.

Do you guys have any ideas for me? A live trap or something? Thanks, guys, JPG

Re: Need Pigeon help!

Surround the feeder with a wire enclosure made from mesh that is large enough to admit small birds, but too small for pigeons. This can also keep out squirrels.

If the pigeons are roosting on railings etc, try applying some of the 'hotfoot' pastes that burn their feet. Google "pigeon repellent".

The problem with chucking objects, etc., at them is what happens when there's a miss or an overpenetration.

Re: Need Pigeon help!

People who keep certain types of songbird houses -- like purple martins -- use live traps to eradicate the undesirables trying to invade their houses without endangering their songbirds. You can buy these traps online or at wildlife supply and Audubon stores but I think your best bet is to copy one of their designs and scale it up to rock pigeon size.

You can find the designs at any of the songbird forums, or there's several designs here.

However, if you're pigeon-rich, since you are in an urban area, I doubt either catching or killing will do much for you until you've got rid of so many of the flying rats that you put a serious dent in the city's population.

Re: Need Pigeon help!

The only other option is glue traps, rock pigeon hate sticky surfaces, for some reason it works we used them at work and it worked great for three months until it rained

Re: Need Pigeon help!

I had a hit today on one of the 6 pigeons. A 3" dart from my 36" Cabela's Blow Gun. I need to train my wife to be a better spotter! The offender flew off, but I hope he died a miserable death. I may try some sort of live trap, but I like the idea of some wire surround. Wish me luck. I will post some pictures in the future. JPG

Your answers can be found here www.nixalite.com its a local company, they have been around for years. I haven't used them nor am I affiliated with them in any way. They do have a good reputation.

We had a couple dozen of them hanging out on the roof of the barn all week. Yesterday was the fourth of July......time to bust out the .22 and celebrate.

Get caught "Near SEattle" shooting a pidgeon and expect the Seattle Times at your doorstep making you out to be a nutcase.

This is the way to go. We have used it in multiple wildlife damage control jobs in the past. Nixalite will prevent them from landing and staying is some spots. The only sure fire way is lethal control. For folks with huge pigeon problems, some people trap them and use them in tower shoots.

Re: Need Pigeon help!

Take a moment to consider what may follow is some neighbor sees you and your wife firing blow darts out the window and decides to summon the po-leece. If you're lucky, you two just may end up coughing up a fairly spendy fine. If you're lucky...

Re: Need Pigeon help!

The powderless 22lr works good. Owls will work, you can do like the businesses do and get the wire strips that have barbs... most pellet guns are fairly quiet.

Re: Need Pigeon help!

Having blow-gunned my share of pigeons as a younger man, I can tell you they don't go down easily, and they will carry the evidence (dart) with them. I used a 6' piece of conduit and 12" bamboo skewer darts and watched them fly off with several inches of dart sticking out of both sides.
My grandpa told stories of a pigeon-infested abandoned warehouse at the plant in which he worked. They used gin-soaked birdseed, and just scooped up pigeons by the sack-full from the floor. This being southeast TX, many of them went in the gumbo pot. I've never tried it, but I always believed the story.

While I agree about the application, those 22's have more oomph than many credit them with.

I've shot squirrels, crows and pidgeons at distances from 15yd to 85yd and had complete pass throughs on many. If you leave the window open a little and setup a "loophole" (I hear the snickers already) you can cut the exterior noise down substantially.

The other one that is probably a better idea would be a paintball gun.

There's nothing "firearms" about them and the regular attendees will learn quite quickly about the yard where objects hit them at the feeder.

That is a brilliant idea. As hard as they can hit, I'd be amazed if they weren't lethal against a pigeon.

Re: Need Pigeon help!

Paint balls hit harder frozen. The Gin soaked seed works,If you plan to eat them. If not "winterize" them with a little green stuff.

Ever watched an animal die from "winterizing"? That's a horrible piece of advice, shooting them is one thing, putting them through the agony of being poisoned is gutless in my opinion.

Re: Need Pigeon help!

Did I read right that a pellet gun is going to give your neighbors a heart attack? If that's true no solution with the word "gun" in it will likely work. Try the humane society, I hate cats but they are efficient killing machines.

Just don't "fully" feed them. Makes 'em lazy. A little growl in the belly brings out the predator in them.

Re: Need Pigeon help!

Ever tried an airsoft gun? My old M4 airsoft gun gave quite a few rabbits and ground squirrels reason to not make their holes near the house. Won't really HURT them per se, but they sure don't like it. I'd imagine the same effect on a bird. Paintball gun idea would probably work pretty good too. Same sh... different day.

Re: Need Pigeon help!

Update guy's,

My step son works in the PM so I set him up with the Beeman zeroed at 15feet. The bird feeder is about 10 feet out of our back door. I showed him how to "loop hole" shoot the air rifle, and off to bed I went. The air rifle isn't that loud from discharged from inside the house with the door cracked about 2". When I got home from work, he had one of thoes stinkin pigeons down. One shot, one kill. We'll make a cold blooded killer out of him yet! Funny, the other 5-6 pigeons haven't been by all evening. JPG
