Ok…soon I will have finished building my second Savage modular platform used as a barrel switch (or swap as others would say…!!!). I wrote this before; I love the ease of being able to change barrels and…voilá… you have a new rifle, plus the glamour and pride associated with building your own rig. I love the trifecta stock-action-scope and by switching the barrel I have another rifle I adore. Oh well…you all know this stuff already. My first rifle is alternated between a 6 mm BR and a 6.5x47 Lapua (on a Savage F-class stock, target Savage action, and a NF Competition scope) used mostly for target shooting up to 1K. Soon, after I will take possession of the McMillan A4 stock I ordered, I will have completed the second platform which for the start is made up by the stock I mentioned above, a single shot Savage target action RBLP, and a Shilen 28” .308 barrel (I opted for this caliber because I have another 308 I am selling and have all the reloading paraphernalia available plus I like the round) and perhaps my Vortex scope. My question to you guys is what options might I have for the alternate switch barrel for the second application? [Having a single shot would even allow me to use cartridges otherwise suited for a LA.]
I mostly shoot targets, I don’t hunt, I don’t like heavy recoil, I want a round that is not finicky or too expensive to reload, good BC, available resources.
Please justify your recommendation. Thank you.

Since you already have a .308 sized bolt, why not go with a 22-250 and run the 77 -80 grn class bullets in a 7.5 twist. H-414 can be found here and there, plus it will still get you to 1K

The possibility are numerous..... I just went through the same quandary. It came down to .260 and .243
you will have more 243 component availability not to mention quality factory options over the .260 but... .260 is pretty sweet
