Rifle Scopes Need Ring/Base Advice for TRG42 and Razor

Now that I've had my TRG42 (.338) almost a year, I finally got a Vortex Razor to go with it. My questions are:

1. The Razor has 125 moa elevation adjustment. Should I be looking for a base with almost half that amount so it doesn't get wasted. Would a Near base with a 45 moa taper be enough? Too much?

2. So far it looks like my ring choices in 35mm are Vortex or Seekins. I would like it to be as solid as possible and protect my investment. Suggestions?

Not that I am recommending them but:

TPS also has 35MM rings, as does IOR Valdada.

Seekins or Vortex Rings would be in all probability your best bet.

Bobro and American Defense Manufacturing both make 35mm rings that are quick detach one piece mounts.

I'm leaning towards the Seekins, as they appear to be high quality and are made about 40 miles from my home. Should I be at all concerned about using aluminum rings on a .338LM?

Just to clarify my understanding of the tapered base- would a scope mounted on a flat base likely be zeroed near the middle of its range of elevation adjustment (~125 moa), thereby rendering half of the travel (~62) useless? So would adding the 45 moa taper give me about 107 moa of useful elevation and the remaining adjustment would just give me a buffer to ensure I can get a 100 yard zero?

It's just a leap of faith between thinking I understand it, and the chances of it working out like I think it will. My experience with optics is pretty limited, so I don't want to make an expensive mistake.

You lucky Dude, I have the exact same decision to make as I am getting a razor for my trg, difference being I have had mine for over two years with no scope. I was going to get the seekins.Let us know what you decide.

Ken Farrell makes a 20 moa with a recoil lug.

With nearly 35 mils of adjustment on tap with the Razor you have lots of flexibilty. Just running some numbers for the 338 Lapua: w/100 zero and 250 gr Sierra MTK @3000 FPS and @1000 yds your down only 7.1 mils, and @ 1600 yds your drop is only around 17 mils. You can darn near make that with a 0 MOA base. To reach 2000 yds you would need around 28 mils of up adjustment. That means a least a 40 MOA base (11.1 mils). So yes, a 45 MOA base (12.5 mils) will get all that you would need to ringout the 338 Lapua.

I would think Seekins rings are stout enough, but give Glenn call or a PM, and get his thoughts.

You are right on track concerning the elevation on the base.
Aluminum rings are usually no problem although I had a set break on my 6.5X47 lapua. Glenn said he thought there was an issue in the stock used to make the rings.

Also, I think Near Manufacturing makes scope rings, but I'm not sure they have a 35mm version.

For all things TRG though, rail, break, etc, Near Manufacturing is second to none. Also, it's all nice and fine if Seekins has what you are looking for in stock, but I've been waiting well over a year with tons of promises for him to make me something, and it's never materialized. Near has always delivered and the products have been beyond expectations. Normally, I'd try to say stay American, but in this case, they might be a really great option too.

I haven't put a base on it yet. I'm planning to get the Near version, and I do believe it has recoil lugs. I was hoping for an Alphamount, but he doesn't offer them in 35mm.

I found that US Optics also sells 35mm rings, so I'll add them to the list of possibilities.

The advantage of the Vortex rings would be that if they messed up the scope I think they would be more likely to take care of it. However, I would rather get the best I can, and not have to worry about rings damaging the scope.
